Ah yes, Nazi germany, a beacon of the 60's.

Ah, the good old days... you know, before desegregation? At the height of the McCarthy witch hunt? You know, before that nasty Equal Pay Act of 1963?

BTW, the USSR did not accept evolution.

There was no suffering before the fall of Darwin. Since then all mankind suffers because of his original sin. What we need is a messiah to give his life for us so that our sins will be forgiven, whilst at the same time meaning, for some reason, we still all have original sin and will go to Hell if we die ebfore we have a chance to suck up to God.

I say Jackie Chan is the messiah, his initials are JC!

I'm going to use my powers of deduction here. You're a white person aren't you?

5/22/2008 1:59:36 PM

cronenurse

yes. You're correct about the 50's...if you were white . Having been what you would call a "demon hippie" you obviously don't know crap about the '60's.

the inner city comment drips with racism and homosexuality was and is alive and well.

You know people have complained that things were better before... for a loooong time.

=> The best time to live was the stone age.

SO much fail.

Actually, the best time to live was the time before christianity. Between the first humans taking their first breaths and the time when Jesus' teachings were bastardized into the hateful font of ignorance we know today as christian belief. Those must have been the best times.

Nah, those Jupiter / Zeus followers made then suck too.

The economy Was rolling in the 50's people lived better back then.

Oh, sure. Just so long as you were white, straight, male, Christian, conservative, employed and rich, didn't ask any difficult questions about the status quo and were violently outspoken against anyone who wasn't all of the above.

Oh yes Beaver Cleaver, the 50 were great unless you were a woman, an african american, a native american, an asian american, a mexican american, etc. I could go on all day long.

Yes. Racism, segregation, the '50s were a great time weren't they?

Nazi Germany? You must mean those guys who believed that Christians were superior to Jews, right?

And banned the teaching of evolution?

The economy didn't start to suffer until the mid seventies, the sixties were also booming years for white-folk and suberbia.

Pretty much everything said up there is the kinda bullshit you get from someone who was a child in the fifties and had to grow up and work in the sixties. Which I always find weird as I was only 13 by 1970 but I guess I had a clue. By 1980 many still enjoyed a privilaged secure livelyhood

What most of you hate about the sixties and seventies is the light it shone on the dark aspects of the 50s, you'd rather remember that America that never existed.

Even when the 50s were the best times (I strongly doubt they were): The 50s are gone. GONE. Dead. D-E-A-D. Former times, never to come back again.

Should we rather look forward for something called The Future and try to build a better future for us all than to dwell in pointless nostalgia? Wouldn't that make more sense?

BTW: It was not evolution or atheism or liberalism that lead to Nazi Germany. What caused Nazi Germany: A criminal organization which shamelessly played on the desires of the german people to bring back the "Good old Times" when times were rough (at the height of the Great Depression)

In the final phase of the Weimar Republic, Hitler was a master in reviving memories of the allegedly "glorious" old times, when the german army was undefeated, when the economy was rolling, and when women knew their place. And the simple minds fell for this trap, and they elected him...

The 50's sucked.

Were you around during the 1950's, JJ? I highly doubt it... I wasn't; I was born in 1969.

The 60's are remembered for "peace, love and understanding" and the sexual revolution. The 50's are remembered for its close-minded consternation regarding Elvis' rotating pelvis. Women were more or less stuck in their homes, children should be seen but not heard, homosexual people were seen as sick and should be sent to jail, etc.

The cities might have been nice and clean, but many families kept together only for show; the men were seldom home and the women were secret drinkers, the children felt neither loved nor wanted; they existed only because everyone was expected to have children.
Homosexual people had to hide their orientation or risk being sent to jail. There were just as many homosexual then as there are now, they just pretended to be heterosexuals.

Yeah, it all sounds really, REALLY great!

Nazi Germany banned the teaching of evolution, stupid. Plus, when the 1950's started, Hitler had been dead for about five years.

@Swede

Ahh, but the Hitler dream never died and early 1950s America was more similar than any time since to his dream, Hitler would be at home in early 50s suburbia.

The neighbors would all be impressed by his wisdom about "dem Jews and Negros infesting our good Christian country"

"The economy Was rolling in the 50's people lived better back then. The inner Cities were nice and clean. everybody had family's. There were no Fags in this country."

...there was Bettie Page - a Christian - who was the top photo model of the time:

And who brought the fetishes of lingerie, stockings, high heels, BDSM, and nudity - especially beaver - to those 'nice and clean families'.

"There were no Fags in this country."

Explain "Beefcake" magazines then, JamesJessica*:

"Top Gear"'s Jeremy Clarkson:

He and his Wise Men Richard Hammond and James May even went to the Middle East, to find the Messiah - and they did; in a rude stable in Jerusalem, with shepherds, and their animals. Also the parents - Mary & Joseph. And they beheld the one who would save the world, wrapped in swaddling racing suit and helmet...:

And they praised him by gifting unto him the precious goods of Gold, Shampoo, and Nintendo DS. Then they said unto the assembled audience:

'Some say, that one of his eyes is a teste. And that he shall cane an Ariel Atom V8 round the Top Gear test track at 1.15.1, beating even the almighty Bugatti Veyron SS's 1.16.8. All we know is... he's called Stig the Christ!'

>>The 1950's were the best times in American History ! ... people lived better back then.<<

That would be when we nuked Utah and New Mexico and some islands in the Pacific and gave a hundred thousand people fatal cancer from the fallout, and killed ten thousand babies and left as many crippled from thalidomide?

Yeah. That was really a better way to live.

Leave it to Beaver is fiction. Life was never like that.

I can actually see this person's point. In the US, the 50's were characterized by a climate of fear. Since fundamentalists live their lives in a state of fear, I can see why they would think it was very affirming to have everyone else living in fear too.

There were no fags in the '50's? You sure about that? Roy Cohn, Truman Capote, Rock Hudson, Liber-fucking-ace? Yep, no gays there. All burly He-Man Woman Haters right there...oh wait...
