Quote# 38499

It seems there are quite a few board members who are threatened by Christianity. Witness the reaction my suggestion that we ban the use of Jesus' name in vain, for example.

My question is: would you be so virulently against Christian ideology if you didn't live in a place that's predominantly Protestant?

In other words, is this just an outgrowth of your fight against the establishment, ie. parents, teachers, cops?

Or is there something special about Christian belief that angers you more than, say, Islam or Buddhism?

Your belief does not anger me. It's the fact that you like to shove it down everyone's throats that angers me.

Christian belief is hardly special; it's just more familiar. (Besides, how come fundies always go after the Catholic church but almost never mention the Eastern Orthodox? Because -- get this -- they know almost nothing about them.)

C'mon, Brian, be fair. Fundies don't know anything about Catholics, either.

So yea, seems like a site about Homestar Runner is the IDEAL place to bring up religion.

Yeah, I'd say the idea of taking away my freedom of speech is pretty threatening.

Dude, most Christians have no idea what the phrase translated as "taking the Lord's name in vain" means. I shudder to think what sort of speech the proposed ban would cover.

It might have more to do with the fact that you're suggesting a flagrant violation of the First Amendment, what with the censorship and all.

"Or is there something special about Christian belief that angers you more than, say, Islam or Buddhism?"

Let's see, there's the knocking on my door so they can practice their indoctrinating skills. I'm pretty tired of televangelists continuing their "ministries" after they are caught in their hypocrisies and make empty but showy gestures of contrition. Plus there is that whole "faith not works" business which fundamentalists use to excuse their intense selfishness.

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

Any suggestion to ban certain expressions would irritate most people. Whether it's "Jesus Christ" or "Galloping Gargoyles" is fairly irrelevant.

I live in a place that's predominantly non-religious, but yeah, Protestantism is very ingrained in our culture. If it was some other religion, I would be against that particular religion trying to restrict my human rights. It's not the brand of religion, but the restricting of human rights that I'm "virulently against".
