Quote# 38525

"Transgender impulses are strong, but they don't match up with the Christian sexual ethic," says Warren Throckmorton, associate professor of psychology at Grove City College in Pennsylvania. "Desires must be brought into alignment with biblical teachings, but it will be inconvenient and distressful."
Throckmorton, past president of the American Mental Health Counselors Association, says he has advised transgendered people who are in absolute agony over their state. Typically, such individuals are desperately in search of hope and acceptance, he says. It may be uncomfortable to tell transgendered individuals that their desires don't align with the Bible, Throckmorton says, but pastors must do so. "Even if science does determine differentiation in the brain at birth," Throckmorton says, "even if there are prenatal influences, we can't set aside teachings of the Bible because of research findings."

I'm not sure what part of me is most offended by this--the liberal part, the atheist part, or the transgender part. Any way you slice it, this clinging to that old book over modern science is bad.

God Is Real Unless Declared Integer

You know that you are FUBAR if even Iran (yes, I-freaking-ran) is more progressive than you! In Iran, gender dysphoria is accepted as real and the state pays for reassignment surgery.

"desperately in search of hope and acceptance"

Sounds like Christians to me

8/3/2008 2:32:57 PM

why do these people go into professions that require them to deal with "sinners" in a sympathetic and positive way. If someone with gender dysphoria wanted to be preached at they'd go to a priest, not a councillor

This treatment is supposed to give them hope?

"we can't set aside teachings of the Bible because of research findings."

Trust me, we've noticed.

Dr. Shrinker

Where is trans-gender surgery forbidden in the bible?

If you rot in hell for 1000 years, you won't even experience a fraction of the pain that scum like you inflict on transsexuals. Or a fraction of the pain that this transsexual would like to inflict on you.

It is surprising that this guy still retains his employment as an associate professor of psychology after making this ridiculous and ignorant statement? And with their rather "discerning" taste in employees, this "Grove City College" seems a lot like one of those diploma mills that help home-schooled fundie spawn acquire white-collar jobs.

6/27/2010 5:42:22 PM

Fine, I'll show you the way out.

*drop-kicks Throckmorton out the door*

Now stay out, science doesn't need you twits slowing down any sign of progress.

Is this some sort of sick joke?

And this mental midget was the president of the "American Mental Health Counselors Association"?

I mean freakin' Pakistan, a country of 98% Muslim population, well-known for their ultra-conservative stance on several issues, could rationalize the civil and social rights of transgender people (http://www.rferl.org/content/pakistan_beleagured_transgender_community_given_new_hope/24396423.html), and yet this guy, a student of science, the freakin' head of an organization exclusively dedicated to mental health, fails so miserably to grasp the idea. It is just bloody shameful.

Being transgender is condemned exactly nowhere in the Bible. Read your own freaking book before you open your mouth.

A religious nutjob hired as the president of people who cure delusions and emotional disorders is like making El Capone chief of the AA, or American Airlines hiring Bin Laden as the new CEO; somehow you suspect that it's just not gonna work out very well.

"It may be uncomfortable to tell transgendered individuals that their desires don't align with the Bible, Throckmorton says, but pastors must do so."

I can't imagine that many transgendered people really give a fuck what the Bible says.

4/8/2012 1:10:51 PM

So according to this douchebag, it's better for transgender people to be miserable their entire lives because of what was made up by nomadic goat herders 2,000+ years ago?

5/4/2012 11:45:28 PM

"We can't let reality get in the way of our oogity-boo".

Yeah, that's about it.

3/22/2013 4:42:13 PM

Yeah, you are admitting that you won't let facts get in way of your brainwashing. Way to go.

3/22/2013 8:18:16 PM

Perhaps pastors must do that, sure, but psychologist and mental health counselors most certainly SHOULDN'T talk like that to desperate people.

We can't set aside obviously wrong and outdated fairy tales because of research findings?

3/23/2013 1:24:25 AM

transgendered people who are in absolute agony over their state

Probably because they consulted Warren Throckmorton.

To be fair, he's probably basing his logic on Deuteronomy 22:5, which condemns crossdressing (distinction between the sexes was important, obviously, and might have to do with 1 Corinthians 11).

Even then, applying that passagge to a person who has the biology of one sex, and the neurology of another, is one hell of a mental leap at best.
