FALLUJAH, Iraq — At the western entrance to the Iraqi city of Fallujah Tuesday, Muamar Anad handed his residence badge to the U.S. Marines guarding the city. They checked to be sure that he was a city resident, and when they were done, Anad said, a Marine slipped a coin out of his pocket and put it in his hand.

Out of fear, he accepted it, Anad said. When he was inside the city, the college student said, he looked at one side of the coin. "Where will you spend eternity?" it asked.

He flipped it over, and on the other side it read, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16."

"They are trying to convert us to Christianity," said Anad, a Sunni Muslim like most residents of this city in Anbar province. At home, he told his story, and his relatives echoed their disapproval: They'd been given the coins, too, he said.

OK, that says to me that the Marine involved got the word before he even went to Iraq that this stuff was not authorized. IOW, he recieved ORDERS not to do it.

I work with and around lots of Marines. They are trained to follow orders to the letter, full stop. If this guy was intentionally violating orders, he could only be doing it because some preacher convinced him to, and that means a whole shitload of brainwashing. Nonetheless, he, and he alone, is responsible for his actions, and the Marines take this stuff extremely seriously.

He's looking at a court-martial, at LEAST. His buddies aren't goin gto be pleased with him, either, nor, I'm certain, will his platoon Sarge.

Trust me, it now sucks real bad to be him.

Maybe because they think they do just good work with converting people (after all they believe that, with every soul they convert, one more person goes to heaven than to hell) and that it therefore is worth even disobeying orders (maybe the marine was even convinced with the famous passage: "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's" and the interpretation that it also means that his superior might order him to do or don´t do worldly things, but that they cannot prevent him from getting new sheep for christ as this is spiritual work)

I first heard this story on Radio Havana Cuba last night, on shortwave, so now it's international. The main difference between RHC's story and Yahoo's is that Yahoo says it's a single Marine doing it, RHC says it's several. Either way it's one too many, and it violates the First Amendment.
