The fact is that America is still the foremost nuclear power. We have LOTS of nukes. If Iran ever attacked us at our current state, they'd be committing suicide or any country for that matter.
The only thing that makes sense is that America has to become somehow crippled in order for it to be weak enough that it can't retaliate back.

As for the rapture; how will Jesus even know to come to America? America is not named in the bible and it was almost 1500 years after Jesus that Europeans came to this nation and "discovered" it.

Not everyone. Just mostly everyone. The targets of a Nuclear assault would be the large cities (assaulting the highest population densities) and important military and political targets. They won't give a whole lot of thought to most of the southern Hemisphere, for example, as to their consideration, they aren't necessarily worth wasting nukes on.
Yes, we have lots of nukes, but we will never use them. Why? They're wrong to use. Also, if we did fire them, there would be no way for the countries nearby that are nuclear-capable to know where the nukes are aimed at...

I dunno, Even if all those raptured are from the USA, and no one is in heaven yet, I think we could cope with the loss of at most 144000 people.
Wow. So the crapture is supposed to take 144,000 people. America just recently topped a population of 300,000,000. Even IF it happens and IF all 144,000 come from America, that's a whopping total of 0.048 percent of the country's population.

Now then, if the rapture takes every good and decent person from the planet, then yes, everyone left behind will be in real trouble.

Funny, you people all seem to think that America is a doomed nation. Shouldn't the rapture leave behind plenty of godless heathens to depend your country?
Edit: If anything is going to kill off humanity, it's going to be a virus, not nukes. Nuclear war could definitely kill off the majority of the world's population, but there would be small pockets of people either living in underground shelters or unaffected remote areas. It would be fairly difficult to actually kill off every single human, given our technology, intelligence, wide-spread population and strong will to survive.
For the record, I'm not too naive to realize that it would be incredibly easy to kill off MOST of humanity... but I'm also not enough of a reactionist to believe that humanity could go extinct due to only one major event.
