I've said it once and I'll say it again. The answer to low self-esteem isn't high self-esteem. The answer to low self-esteem is no self-esteem. My value is in Christ, not in myself. Apart from Him, I'm nothing.

Hmm... then they accuse freethought and Darwinism as being a source of low self-esteem.
I've attended Southern Baptist church services many times, and their focus on self-degradation (and judgment of hurricane victims) is quite scary when approached from a rational perspective. My parents and I are currently going to my uncle's church--he preaches there--and while being freewill baptist and as irrational as most other religions, they do not really emphasize that weird scary cult-like stuff, just the typical Protestant dross. And no, neither my g/f nor mom has been kicked out for wearing pants (l.o.l.).
"Apart from Him, I'm nothing"
Noo noooo noooo, you are NOT nothing. You're an idiot.
As someone who was forced to take fundie Christian Counseling when I was a depressed suicidal teen, I feel I have the authority to say:
Fuck. You.
Telling someone they should hate themself for hating themself is NOT going to fix anything, genius.
Well, "RightIdea", when you want to dwell in depression and misery, thats nice for you. Go ahead.
Unfortunately, I strongly suspect that you want to drag me down to your level. And I can tell you, seriously: Don't even think to preach to me that I'm allegedly 'nothing'.
Let me guess, your pastor convinced you of this. He (you know it is a "he") wants you to believe that you are nothing apart from Christ, and that since your pastor is a man of Christ, you have to obey him without question. I base this on the fact that people generally want to believe that they have value, and it usually takes the efforts of a real world person to convince them otherwise.
Am I right so far?
Okay then, here's how I see your story ending:
1) You are broke
2) Some one winds up sexually abused and/or dead at the hands of your pastor.
I base this on the fact that this is how such stories always go.
Does that mean you're Christ, RightIdea?
If You - Christ = 0 Then, going by the rules of algebra, You = Christ!
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
