My son, who was raised in the church, came home from college announcing that he believes ALL religions are false especially Christianity, and "an opiate of the people" He's voted for Obama in the primary and plans to vote for him in the general election. He says "If I will read The Audacity of Hope" He will read a book of my choosing. Please pray that I can find the exact book God would have him read to open his Blinded eyes. He says religion is used by power brokers to manipulate the people. He says he is not communist....... This child made a profession of faith at 10. He says he was just a Christian because that was the culture he was raised in.......He believes that is why I am a Christian too. Pray for me.

"My son ... was raised in the church...."
How odd. I'm rasing my sons in my home. I'm hoping they'll grow up to think for themselves.
Looks like some children manage to grow past the constant brainwashing.
It is so hard to pull one's self from christianity (at least it was for me - even though I had no faith in it, because of the conditioning), so kudos to this kid for sloughing it off so young!
To be honest, I feel as if this is the same reason my parents are christians. Cultural influences and familial pressure.
Again with the 10-year-olds. I rest my case.
And your son's right--if you'd been raised Hindu, you'd be bemoaning his rejection of that faith. Now...have you asked him if he was gay yet?
I want to gloat, but frankly the boy needs to come off the professor's view and do his own reading. I did; it's how I'm pretty sure I'll never go back.
Second best thing to a homophobe finding out their kid is gay though...
Your son is right, and he is a gleaming beacon for all those who are indoctrinated into your cult, that they, too, can be saved from mind-deadening bible studies and church sessions.
He is now much more likely to lead a full life, rather than squandering his life praying to an imaginary being.
Be proud of him.
Your son left home, got an education, used his brain instead of forced coercion and made his own decisions.
How horrible for you to have a raised a man who thinks for himself.
Shun him! Stone him!
Any idea on what book Mother would use?
A profession of faith at 10 is meaningless. It just means "I gotta do what they tell me, or I get whupped".
Why is it that fundies think that raising a child Christian will ensure that they remain in that faith?
I do love how they think that when their kid is 10 and professes the faith of their parents that it means they're hooked for life.
You see, everything was your fault, Cynthiann.
It was your decisiopnj to send him to a public school, where he would be able to learn critical thinking.
Had you instead decided to homeschool him, withholding every lesson about critical thinking and teaching him false logic about why science is only right when it doesn´t contradict the bible, then probably your son wouldn´t have turned out to be such a disappointment ;)

I completely agree. My 'profession of faith' didn't stick because I was told "you're going to go up there and do it whether you believe or not, or you'll cause a scandal and bring shame to your family." So much for it actually meaning anything.
I just love this quote on the forum...
"My oldest didn't go to college, and has a decent job for now. And, he still believes what he was raised on.....Christianity. That is more important than a college education."
Uh. Yeah. *eyeroll*
wow, your son sounds very logical and I'm especially impressed he pulled himself so far out of the depths of lunacy you not doubt plunged him into. Good luck with trying to fuck up his life again by getting him to reject reality, but it sounds like he's pretty far past that. Perhaps the Audacity of Hope will open your eyes to reality, but I have a feeling you never planned to hold up your side of the bargain or are too blind to ever see teh light of reality anyway.
Pray for me.
Let's pray that you pause for 10 seconds and really think over your son's message. Why exactly are you so sure he's the blinded one?
Other than warped thinking, I'm glad the parent didn't flip out and go berserk like some other fundies do. There's hope.
Ah, I'm not going to be mean. This is a mother who obviously loves her kid and is afraid for his immortal soul. For his part, he's not being a huge jerk, just offering an exchange of ideas. Hopefully they'll both walk away with a gentler perspective on humanity.
Good on your son.
And I don't have anything else to add, other than I first read her name as "Cynthia Ann" and had this image of her down at the church pot luck with her fellow moms-in-Christ with names like Tiffany Lurlene and Dora Mae all complaining about their children going off to school and getting that fancy book learning.
I am 74 (today!) and have now been atheist for 23 wonderful enlightened years.
Religion is supposed to be the uniter of the faithful, but in fact is the great divider of the human race. We are all equal regardless of belief.
Does a fireman rescuing people from a burning building ask himself "but are they christians?" then stands back and watch them die because they are not? Because that is exactly how you lunatics at Rapture Ready think!
Your son is now a member of the human race. Perhaps you should join him.
Well, yeah, isn't that the reason most in the US identify as Christian - family and cultural expectations? It's not like he understood at 10 years old exactly what was going on. I know I didn't. Really, shouldn't you be happy he's not involved in a cult similar to Heaven's Gate or something?
" I am 74 (today!) and have now been atheist for 23 wonderful enlightened years. "
Sheesh!
I had these worthless cons made when I was 7.
Glad you figured it out while you still had a few years.
Sounds like you've (somehow) managed to produce a child with the intelligence and thoughtfulness to question beliefs he was raised with and make his own decisions. If I ever raise children, I would want them to be like your son, and able to clearly think about things they are taught for themselves.
If you were sane, and not a brainwashed fundie you'd be rightfully proud of him.
PS: Does your son have a girlfriend? Can I have his email address?
"Please pray that I can find the exact book God would have him read to open his Blinded eyes."
Quantum Mechanics, by Dirac.
Well, there's at least one bright lad saved from the Rapture Ready morass, so there's always hope.
I just hope he hasn't been dragged back into it since his darling mom posted, although he seems altogether too clever a young fellow to allow that to happen. You go, boy!
I like him. I wonder if he's got a 360 and LIVE or a Steam account. I wonder if he's a Browncoat. If not, well, Netflix Instant Stream has that party viewing thing that lets you watch things with even if the other people doesn't have NIS.
This story sounds far too pat for my liking.
Naw, I say Cynthiann is lying to get some attention and sympathy from her RR "family." Oh, and to underscore the "dangers" of letting your children get an education.
You should have raised him in your home instead.
Do NOT give him the Bible to read. If he has already been blinded by reality, that book will only push him even further away into blindness and rationality.
Your son has got it perfectly right. He's in contact with reality, apparently you're not.
My best wishes to your son, he has his head screwed on straight.
Well, you know, people in overwhelmingly Muslim/Hindu/Buddhist/Christian/Pagan countries tend to overwhelmingly be Muslim/Hindu/Buddhist/Christian/Pagan, so it probably has something to do with herd-behaviour.
Ugh, Freshman wannabe Marxists. Dammit, kid, people like you are why socialists have a bad name in this country.
OK, maybe the third-biggest reason, after conservative conspiracy theories and liberal slander.
Confused?
