Why shouldn't kids be expected to shoot their teachers and fellow students when they are taught that their creator was primordial soup? Though secular science books teach that a first living cell evolved from chemicals, the idea is not science, but an opinion about ancient history. For it to be true, the ingredients cells are made of would have to be capable of forming under natural conditions. But God made cells of materials that will never form anywhere in nature except in already living cells. DNA, RNA, and proteins won¹t form outside of already living cells, they all break down. If one of them had been able to form spontaneously as many secular biology books lead students to believe, it would have broken down while waiting for the others.

If they've also been taught to focus on their future and not their past, which is a good teaching whatever your religious tradition. And whence this "creator" business? Soup can't create anything.

Howso? The origin of human beings has absolutely nothing to do with my purpose in life. I'm going to grow up and make the world a better place, and that won't change even if I find out my species was created by a giant polka-dotted weasel smoking a trick cigar.

Dear me, are you really THAT bad at spin? I can turn it round into pro-Christianity in twenty seconds: "What makes us different from a swirl of primordial soup? Our relationship with God who loves us." Sorted.

I sincerely doubt it. You may BELIEVE it was God who first created life, but it's impossible to PROVE that.

I'm not a scientist, but I imagine that if conditions were right for a living cell to exist, there would be more than just one. And the idea that a cell would be "waiting" for the others is odd. I would suppose that the first cell lived life independently, much like an amoeba.

The old "We'd all kill each other if we weren't afraid God would throw us in the Lake O'Fire" hypothesis. Let's see how a scientist would test it: if the hypothesis is true, we should predict the following: (a) few if any believers in God should ever commit serious crimes; (b) societies that are less religious should have more serious crime than ones where the people are more religious.

Both predictions are false. (a) In the U.S., a higher proportion of religious people are in prison. (b) The U.S., which is one of the most religious of the western nations, has one of the highest murder and rape rates - far higher than the rates in most of the fairly non-religious European countries.

Therefore, the hypothesis is wrong.

The Golden Rule? By the way, nobody teaches anyone that our "creator" was "primordial soup" you idiot. Well, except for creationists who probably like to teach their kids that that's what evolution says.

Each individual creates their own purpose in life. Moral standards do not come from a belief in a divine creator.

Salvation from what again? Go on, tell me. I love hearing people tell me how a god that loves me wants me to burn in hell for all eternity because of something two people supposedly did 6000 years ago as a direct result of said god's actions. This god, however, comes up with the clever plan to forgive me by substitutional sacrifice of his only son who is, in actuality, himself--except that it only work if I believe this person "died for me" even though they're a deity and not really dead, nor were they ever.

And then they look at me funny when I laugh at them.

Somehow I doubt this. Both that "soup" supposedly "created" life (rather than well understood laws of chemistry) and that you have any sort of scientific evidence that god created life.

Um ... have you ever actually talked to a molecular biologist? You know, someone who actually works with DNA and RNA for a living?

DNA is surprisingly robust. While it's true you can unzip a double-stranded DNA molecule into two single strands using a little heat, the single strands themselves will hold together quite well in a variety of environments. In fact, you have to ADD special enzymes if you want to chop the DNA into smaller pieces.

Protein is even worse. You know those cases of mad cow disease? They're called by a special isomer of a particular protein, called a "prion." This prion protein not only survives the death of the cow that had it and being ground up into feeder stock, it can even survive the kinds of high temperatures found in a crematorium!
