Before you go on about chiropracters not being "real" doctors, remember this:

I dislocated my hip, and went to the emergency room. The "real" doctor there gave me a subcutaneous shot of Demerol for the pain (Demerol needs to be given intramuscularly - you should have seen the blister on my ass) and told me I needed to lose weight.

I then went to the chiropracter two blocks from where I live (he has an excellent reputation) the next morning. He took an X-ray, went, "Hmm, your hip is dislocated," and put it back in place.

Who was the "real" doctor for my situation?

I would not go to the chiropracter if I had the flu, or a broken bone, or appendicitis. If I need my skeleton manipulated to relieve a pinched nerve or a dislocation, I go to the chiropracter (after checking his references, of course - just like a "real" doctor).

Personally, I don't believe in Reiki, but if it makes a person feel better emotionally while they are receiving actual medical treatment, I don't think it causes any harm. It's no different than praying while receiving medical treatment.

Frank: I've had Reiki done, for the purposes of relaxation and stress relief. Any healing properties it might have are, honestly, beyond my knowledge (and honestly, I don't much care). If used for those purposes - quiet reflexion, relaxation, etc. - it's quite effective as a means of relieving tension and not at all as dangerous as some people make it sound.

(Edited to add: In case it's confusing as to why I say it's useful for that... The way it was done for me, it was with me laying on a table (much like a massage table) in a darkened room with candle light and soft music. How could that not be relaxing?)

I totally agree that people shouldn't use it in place of seeking real medical treatment. Just please don't lump us all into that same "they're stupid and causing people harm by defending it" category. Don't we get enough of that from fundies? :)
