[In response to news about a fundie teacher being fired for burning crosses onto kids' arms, among other things.]

I would have loved having him as a teacher when I was young, and I wouldn't mind him as a teacher for any of my kids. Obviously the burning was a scientific experiment, and he knew what he was doing, it obviouslly wasn't painful. The kids didnt seem to mind it, and probably thought it was cool. If he had burned a crescent or some kind of new age symbol he probably would still have a jod, IMHO.

I've actually not heard the "scientific experiment" angle before. Two points regarding that.

First, what kind of experiment would involve something like this? What the hell was he trying to prove?

Second, it doesn't matter WHAT the experiment was, the classroom was no place for it! You don't use a bunch of little kids as test subjects, you jackass!!!

Lastly, he might still have a "jod" if he burned something else into their arms, but he damn sure wouldn't have a JOB. He wasn't fired for his religious beliefs, but for expressing those beliefs using fire, idiot.

Oh, and Pokey? That's an interesting argument. Let's test that, shall we? Go turn your stove on to maximum heat, and when the heating element starts glowing red, hold your forearm against it until the shape appears on your arm, and see if it hurts. That's basically what he did.

OK, Calm it, i'm not siding with the guy. i said i never read the article, & i doubt that he used a heat that to the level of a stove on maximum, i guess it's possible but if that was the case he should have got more than simply losing his job.

Maybe your assuming that seeing th word burning/scolding/engraving your all of a sudden guessing that it hurt. Which i'm not against IF it hurt. But if it didn't hurt & the kids could opt out i don't see a problem. Heck do we even KNOW that the teacher is a fundie? Like i said i've never read the article, so if it states that there kids suffered (ANY!) pain or the marks where long lasting or permanent then i'm wrong. I'm not going to dispute that, but you answered my question as well as most of the fundie posts on this site do.

Is civility non-existent now or what? it's not as if i'm imploring people to blow kids arms of with a blow torch

Sorry if I came off a little harsh, I didn't mean to blame you, this topic just pisses me off. As far as I know, the mark lats a decent while, even if it isn't permanent. After all, it lasted at least long enough for one to be clearly photographed, as the picture was included with one of the news stories covering it.

The article also mentioned that a high-voltage electric device was used, and while I'm no expert, that sounds bloody painful. We're talking a 50,000 volt-emitting device that has a clear warning not to touch it to skin. Now, the maker swears that it would be just like static from a doorknob, but since that would never leave a mark, I firmly doubt that claim.

As for the "volunteering" argument, that sounds kind of sketchy, since I can't imagine a middle schooler that would willingly choose to be given multiple electric shocks.

Again, I'm sorry if I seemed pissed at you personally, Pokey. I'm not. I'm just pissed off at this teacher.

EDIT: From the article in the Columbus Dispatch:
"The school's principal spoke with Freshwater on Dec. 10, three days after one boy's mother complained that the pain of the burn on his arm kept her son awake."

Apparently we have confirmation of the pain not only being there, but being pretty bad, too.

Which is why it horrifies me that these people can breed like goddamn rabbits, but parents that are actually interested in the welfare of the children cannot adopt. Appalling.

Of course, the kids were up at night because of the sheer thrill of having a teacher try and scorch religious symbols on their body. I know I can't think of a greater thrill than that... *eyeroll*

Well surely if the parents that didn't believe the Christian dogma should have put up with the crosses, you wouldn't have minded if your kids got branded with a crescent or a pentagram...right?
