Right, now as an atheist, you just have to accept that humanity is a destructive plague on the Earth!

We are certainly not doing any good, not to most other species, nor to each other.
But where does atheism come in?
Personally, I don't care how people word the "we need to take care of the earth" message as long as it convinces some people to live more sustainably or pollute less.
Regardless though, I still think the "as an atheist" part was unnecessary. People should be able to accept the fact that we're screwing the world up and need to do something about that, regardless of faith or lack there-of.
A destructive plague?
Always with the polarizations with you people: Lion or lamb, feast or famine.
Do I think that we need to wise up about the cold hard facts of nature - i.e., there isn't enough oil to sustain our current use for more than a century or two at the most, deforestation is having a global impact, etc.? Of course.
A plague is something unstoppable that must run its full course before it dies out. Humanity knows better, we just choose to ignore our common sense and our consciences. Pure and simple.
Right, now as a christian, you just have to accept that god will take care of you in the afterlife so it doesn't matter if you pollute, litter, or whatever!
Eh. On average, I'd say humanity's effect on global genetic diversity has been a zero-sum game thus far. We killed some species and are altering the environments of others so much that they can no longer support breeding populations, but all the genetic manipulation of plants for better crops and selective breeding of pets into the hundreds of different species we have today balanes that out. (I'm probably wrong there; it depends a lot on my rather broad definition of genetic diversity.)
See dogs. Without humans breeding them to retain certain traits and behaviours, we wouldn't have dogs at all (just wolves).
About natural resources such as oil and gas: I'm fairly sure they're only 'resources' to humans. Mice don't give a sh*t about oil reserves, because they have no use and no need for it. So Humans are only a plague on our own future resources, not on the Earth itself.
...But that all depends on how you classify 'a plague on the Earth'.

No, no, not humanity ; the proper spellings are r-e-l-i-g-i-o-n.
We do have a certain knack of exterminating other species, the Earth would probably do better without us.
But if we disapeared, some other species would probably take our place within a few hundred thousand years.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
