To paraphrase the recent Supreme Court decision, there is an individual right to keep and bear arms, and just because you are an incompetent government that has no clue how to deal with violent crime doesn't mean you can take away my God-given right to defend myself. Take that you darn liberals!

It's sad that mostly only right-wingers are interested in this right.
I'd say the risk of our society becoming controlled by a right-wing dictator is a bigger threat, and then all the people who keep arms will be siding with the dictator.
This doesn't come off as fundy to me. As an atheist and a gun-enthusiast the only thing I disagree with is the 'God-given' part. And one of the reasons that I practice with guns is just in case some nutty government decides it doesn't like our freedoms.
Don't know how to deal with criminals? They sure knew what to wiith the gun toting crazies at ruby ridge!

How exactly is this bad? The pro-gun "control" fundies are just as loony as the religious fundies and the "security" worshipping zealots. Passing laws that create "gun-free" school zones and other laws that restrict people from defending themselves leads to people being killed because you cannot keep guns out of the hands of criminals (however, you can keep them out of the hands of potential crime victims). Obviously, even the most zealous member of the Brady Campaign would not hang a "gun-free" zone sign outside of their home, so it is clear that everybody knows this at some level. The Supreme Court has said in the past that we have no right to protection from the police, so there goes the argument that the police will protect people from crime. Even if you did have a right to protection by the police and they actually responded to a phone call, how exactly are the cops going to get there before the criminal shoots you? Besides that, it is absurd to claim that the Constitution is even remotely in favor of ANY restriction on the right to keep and bear arms ("well-regulated" meant "well-trained" in the late 1700s and it does say that the right to keep and bear arms "shall not be infringed") and this is the one part of the Bill of Rights that was incorporated prior to the 14th Amendment. The crankery of the gun banners is reminiscent of the crankery of those who claim that the 1st Amendment protects the right of free speech except when there is a "compelling governmental interest" (it says that the freedom of speech "shall not be abridged") or of those who claim that habeas corpus is not in the Constitution (such as that fascist lunatic the Republican Party nominated for president). The anti-gun arguments are frivolous and remind me of Creationism.
More proof that "progressives" can be just as crazy as conservatives. Just as the Democrats now claim that they support peace and civil liberties, the Republicans used to claim that they support limited government and a "more humble" foreign policy. I have a feeling that we'll find out whether the "progressives" are sincere before too long.
Having weapons to defend life and liberty isn't a "God-given" right; it's a right that I gave to myself simply because I refuse to let other human beings have absolute power over me. If someone wants to take my life or freedom, he will have to risk his life to do so. I, not any God, have decided this.
This is not a right- or left-wing issue. Those with weapons (and the will and ability to use them) can do as they please to those without them. Unarmed citizens are ALWAYS enslaved; they have NO rights, only privileges granted to them by their masters.

Rights aren't given by anything, not a deity, and not a society. Rights are an intrinsic property of a sapient entity which is able to recognize that it possesses those rights. If a right is granted, it can be revoked, and rights cannot be revoked.

I hate to say it but on this subject, Kevie-Poo has a point. Gun ownership is the one Constitutional right we're actively discouraged from practicing. My personal opinion is that most of the gun violence we're seeing these days is due to the fact that gun safety is no longer taught as widely as it once was. When I was young my dad bought me a .22 bolt action rifle and took me to the gun range to learn how to use it safely. (And just to stifle what you're probably thinking, I'm no gun nut. I haven't owned a gun since then but I have a very practical and healthy respect for how dangerous a gun can be. Maybe if kids were taught that a gun is a tool for making dead people instead of a cool fashion/lifestyle accessory things wouldn't be so far out of hand.)

If God had been *really* smart, He would have made the world so safe that you don't *need* to defend yourself in the first place!

The USA's goverment has tanks, jets, bombs, etc. It has intervening in many sovereing nations... and they had weapons as well. If it wants to slave his own people it won´t be a punny pistol or rifle that will stop it.
