[about the supreme court striking down a Louisiana law allowing the execution of child molesters]
The Supreme Court has failed to protect the most innocent of our society - unborn children - now they again are failing to protect our living children. The slide to Gomorrah continues.

According to the belief of many of you fundies, one might say that people who abort children do them a favor, because they (the children) go straight to heaven and don´t get into danger of denying Jesus (and thefrefore going to hell) after they are born ;)
*sigh* They're not letting child molesters GO...they're still going to prison, douchenozzle.
And I'm not even going to touch the blatant misunderstanding of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah...
If the court let that law stand, it would be ageism. All rapes should be treated equally, regardless of the age of the victim. To do otherwise, enshrines bigotry in the law. I would support the death penalty for rapists across the board, but I am against elevating the status of children above that of adult women.
A) The death penalty is barbaric and makes us no better than the people we execute.
B) If you make molestation a death penalty crime, pedophiles have more reason to kill their victims. If capital punishment is only applied in cases of murder, perpetrators of rape are less likely to kill their victims. If you make anything other than murder a capital offence, you take away that incentive to keep the victim alive. Murder should ALWAYS carry the harshest punishment.
C) Embryos are not children. They are not sentient. Therefore, they have no rights.
Yeah, to obad we dont' have a large institution to put these people.
Someplace where they had guards and high walls to make sure that people dangerous to society couldn't get out and threaten people.
We could hold or "imprison" people convicted of dangerous crimes there.
They could call it..a prison.
Yeah, too bad we don't have any of those.
They go to prison.
Might as well be a death sentence because you more than likely aren't getting out.
Im not for the death penalty, just saying prison for them is more or less like the death penalty.
But, won't your god protect them all? Why should humans take the law into their own hands when your god makes the laws and enforces them?
Also, there is no connection between unborn fetuses and living children. You can't make a connection where one doesn't exist.
Aargh.
Sometimes FSTDT posters also say the darndest things.
I can't agree with tmr :
"Also, there is no connection between unborn fetuses and living children. You can't make a connection where one doesn't exist."
That's no more valid a claim than "Also, there is no connection between children and adults. You can't make a connection where one doesn't exist" In both cases the clear connection is that the one turns into the other. I'm not saying lgforan attempts to argue this, he clearly already assumes it. But tmr's quote does NOT disprove it.
Equally Sophia's claim "Embryos are not children. They are not sentient. Therefore, they have no rights." is as hand-wavingly assuming her conclusions as any Fundie. When I sleep I am not sentient, but I still have rights. The fact I will later become sentient is not the source of my rights, for the same is true of embryos.
I do think there needs to be harsher punishments and longer sentences (life?) for child molesters. I hesitate to advocate for the death sentence ONLY on behalf of the wrongly accused. Far too many child molesters, child (and adult) rapists, and other sex offenders are out of prison and back in the community in little time. In my city there are an unbelievable number of sex offenders - and I'm talking serious crimes such as rape, rape of a child, child molestation, etc. - just in my neighborhood and surrounding area... and those are just the registered ones. There are convicted child molesters within easily-walked blocks of elementary schools. My internship with state child welfare services really enlightened me on how HUGE of a problem sex crimes against children was/is... and the state only ever knew about the ones that got caught, not any of the ones covered up. I have no compassion for pedophiles or other sex offenders and strongly believe in much harsher punishments for those convicted.
John_in_Oz: You are still sentient while sleeping. Your brain waves let us show you them! You just aren't conscious. The fact that you were sentient prior to sleeping (and continue to be sentient) give you your rights as a human. An embryo has never, ever been sentient (or conscious), and we can and often should prevent that future event from occurring.
How is executing people who have already molested the children and been captured protecting anyone more than imprisonment!? Damn, think these things through!
And, no, I know what you are going to jump for, and it is simply untrue: the death penalty is not a deterrent.
The death penalty is wrong because there is a chance of executing innocent people (in fact, 50% of appealed cases lead to the death penalty being overturned). Child molestation cases have a much higher likelihood of false conviction, due to frequently leading questions from psychiatrists who want to get a conviction. For more information, read about the McMartin preschool trial @ http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/mcmartin/mcmartin.html
Also, if you have a death penalty for child molestation, the guilty are more likely to kill their victims, as it lowers the chance of conviction.
Confused?
