What is the point of being atheist? Why not beleive in somthing?
I am a person who believes in a god. In my life I have experienced many super-natural, odd things proving to me there is "something more." But even if the bible is all fake, what is the point of being an atheist.

I'm a person who believes in a god but still "sins" daily like everyone else. Now if there was a god, he would realize that EVERYONE sins. As long as you live your life "trying to make the world a better place" rather than being a rotten person committing murder, making it a worse place, you would get into heaven.

Becoming an atheist to me doesn't make sense because I would live my life no differently, and in the end if there WAS a god I would be ****** completely by denying him. If I just accept there is, i have at least a chance to get into this "heaven" rather than guarantee absolutely nothing.

Whats the point in the end in my case?

We do believe in something. We believe in the intrinsic worth of the human race, regardless of race, gender, age, sexual oriantation, or other superficial difference.

We also believe that the human race is capable of transcending it's differences to create a positive future for itself, rather than a bleak view of eventual oblivion at the hands of a fickle deity.

Our morality comes from the view that every member of humanity has worth, or potential worth, in the world, and that each member of the human race has the right to decide how they can live their lives, as long as those choices do not take those rights from others.

Although sometimes there are those who violate the rights and well-being of others, such that they need to be imprisoned, or even killed, to protect the innocent, we feel sad at the loss of what that person could have accomplished under better circumstances, and try to take the minumum amount of action necessary against them in removing their threat.

Your morality views the human race in terms of it's lack of worth, as you only assign such according to a deity whose actions repeatedly say that individual people have no value than to make examples of, or as colateral damage in one of it's tirades.

I believe in lots of things, just not a completely ridiculous collection of badly-written morality plays and cautionary tales from the bronze age, composed by superstitious, ignorant goat-herders.

Not believing in the existence of a magical sky fairy with ADD, multiple-personality-disorder and psychotic tendencies doesn't mean I don't believe in the supernatural/paranormal.

I believe in ghosts, UFOs, Nessie and even Bigfoot.

Why? Unlike God, we have thousands of pictures/video recordings, physical evidence (Sasquatch/Yeti tracks, for example), and hundreds of credible witnesses (and I don't mean Joe-Bob and Betty Sue down at the trailer-park; I mean folks like military officers, airforce pilots, astronauts, even high-ranking politicians).

What do you God-botherers have? A 2000 - 4000-year-old book, most of whose contents were patched together from much older myths, legends and stories--and that includes the "biography" of Jesus Christ (and probably some or even all of the apostles who followed him around).

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go pray to the Flying Spaghetti Monster, as I'm starving, and I have a craving for pasta. Blessed be His noodly visage. Ramen.

There is no "point" to my beliefs -- I just so happen to be unable to accept the idea of a god. I don't CHOOSE to be an atheist, it's what comes naturally to me. I could try to lie to myself and convince myself that there is a god, but what would be the point in THAT? I still wouldn't believe in god. In fact, I did that very thing for years, before finally accepting reality. If I could pick and choose the belief I find most comforting, I'd believe in reincarnation.

Tell me, what's the point in not believing that the flying spaghetti monster isn't out there, waiting to condemn you to hell for eating pasta?

Pascal's wager is nothing more than an appeal to people's primitive fears. It proves absolutely nothing, other than your own cowardice.

This demonstrates that people use religion to justify behavior, rather than modifying behavior to suit religious beliefs. Its true of almost everybody (OK- probably a few lunatics aside).

I call myself an atheist now, but when I was younger I would tell people that I was indifferent to the existence of god, rather than atheist or agnostic. My reasoning was that belief one way or the other wouldn't make much of a difference in the way that I chose to live. I find that I tend to emulate the behavior of my parents, who are devoutly Catholic-- I do this not because I share their superstitions, but because I admire them and want to be like them.

My guess is that this is the real motivation for most of human morality (as part of a more encompassing evolutionary explanation). Its also a pretty good explanation for why most of the agnostics, atheists and indifferent are NOT violent sociopaths.
