Niven said a good way to help hospitals stem financial losses is to spread rumors in Spanish within the Latino community that emergency rooms are killing patients in order to harvest their organs for transplants.
“The problem [of hospitals going broke] is hugely exaggerated by illegal aliens who aren’t going to pay for anything anyway,” Niven said.

The best part is the part where Niven is giving this vitriolic tirade directly to the defense department, which is for some inexplicable reason listening to him.
Now, I realize that you completely ignore science fiction authors at your peril. The "Clarke Belt" of satellites in geostationary orbit around the equator isn't called that for no reason. But I think it is very telling that the Bush Administration is so off into ideological madness that they seriously only listen to out-of-the-box science fiction ideas from sci-fi authors who share their neocon madness.
It's a sad day when you realize that the current clowns in charge would have thrown out Arthur C. Clarke's ideas - not because they were out there - but merely because he was insufficiently conservative on tangential issues to even get a hearing.

Agreed, it's a little strange. And honestly... Larry Niven? THAT Larry Niven?
On the other hand, illegal aliens. Seriously you guys. Seriously. If we're going to just tip-toe around them, give them a green card and a bloody hot dog. At least make up your minds about their status as criminals or blessed holy citizens that we can't possibly criminalize despite the illegality of what they did.
Damnit, Larry Niven! It can't be you. I mean, sure, I hate your books, but I can't believe one of those classic sci-fi new wave authors would be...this stupid .
;_;
Nah, see, white people killed everyone and waged war against the natives, which makes it right... somehow. I don't know.
When I read this on the quotes page, my reaction was "Damn. This guy has the same name as Larry Niven the writer. The 'real' Larry Niven would be pissed off to know someone's going around spewing idiocy under his name."
Followed the link, and it IS the real Niven. How sad...
Doesn't really suprise me; I seem to remember Niven and Pournelle going round bragging how they sold the idea of "Star Wars" and SDI to Reagan.
Pity that, they did once produce some good SF, although I would never call it "New Wave SF", more old fashioned Space Opera stuff like that of Robert Heinlen.....come to think of it, he was pretty much to the right of Gengis Kahn in later life.......
Re: Mick McT's post
But then Mr Robert Heinlen, at the time you mention, had suffered at least 1 major stroke, that probably altered his personality, as a result...
Confused?
