The cover is satirical. It's a statement being made by the New Yorker, trying to show how ridiculous the people who are afraid of the Obamas really are.
By the way, I'm white and I've been an Obama supporter since day one.

"By the way, I'm white and I've been an Obama supporter since day one."
Why?

While the cover may be satirical, I'm inclined to agree with the poster, actually. The majority of white people don't support Obama because he is black, and for no other reason.

@#627141: Then why did he win in Maine and Iowa?
Seriously, black supremacists and the KKK are just 2 sides of the same coin.

I think this whole Obama-New Yorker cover controversy shows the glaring failure of America's public school system.

Whites will vote for Obama for one simply reason- in terms of policy, he is white. He insults black people in a manner that, were he any other colour, would be considered rascist, he refuses to adress black issues (such as the continuation of the institution of rascism, or even basic poverty- a non-racial mostly black issue), and he denies the constant oppression that they live under. Actually, scratch that, he blames them for it.
The easiest way to not be dis-illusioned when eletion day passes, as he comes out as another Clintonesque war-mongering, corporate-led murderer and restates all of his ambiguous positions on everything from Iraq (might pull out in 2 years, maybe, but all that oil...) to Israel-palestine (Palestinians are at fault for resisting their imminenant extermination and attempting to break out of their open-air prison) and the corporate world (yay buisness- people don't matter, profit over all!) is to have no illusions about his progressiveness now.

@ArmandT:
I suppose what I should have said is: the majority of the white people who dislike him do so for no reason other than because he is black. Is this statement more agreeable?

/You should take it for what it is: an example of how whites actually feel about Barack and Michelle Obama./
No, YOU should take it for what it is: a satire.
/These people believe the worst about Black people so of course they are going to believe this about the Obamas./
What people? The New Yorker staff?
/Whites aren't going to vote for Obama/
My dad and I are white and we are very likely going to vote for Obama. FAIL.
/and these are the reasons why. The whites will say "i'm not voting for him because I don't agree with his policies" but the truth is the whites refuse to vote for him because they hate Black people and muslims./
We do not hate blacks or Muslims.
/The whites hate Michelle Obama because whites extremely hate Black women, that's why the whites treat Black women like prostitutes./
I am white. I do not hate Michelle Obama. I do not "extremely hate Black women" and I certainly do not "treat Black women like prostitutes." My best friend is black, honest to God. And she herself is reluctant to vote for Obama. FAIL.
/Don't get mad over this cover because this is just the beginning of what the whites are going to do against the Obamas. This is what these people do to people they hate./
Not all whites hate black people! Are you trying to be a pre-Mecca Malcolm X? Yes, we do have some ignorant racists among us, but so do you. So does every other race on the planet. Most of us have moved ahead of that "separate but equal negro" stage. By preaching that all whites are racist, you are no better than white supremacists who claim that all black people are animals. Dear God.

I'm tired of Obama-supporters attempting to coerce white voters into supporting their candidate with the "implied racism" card. I will not be voting for Barack in November. It has nothing to do with his skin color or religion; I simply don't support the man's views on certain key issues. I would readily support a black candidate if I agreed with his or her political views. However, it appears that many Obama-supporters would like to hold white voters hostage by saying "if you don't vote for our candidate, you're a racist." Believe it or not, some people just think Barack is full of it :-)

I was shocked by the cover, but I can see their point. Maybe it was better to leave that picture inside with the article explaining their position.
@ Darth Vader
Sorry you feel that way. Sorry if people have said that to you. It's a ridiculous comment. Your right, if you disagree with his politics, then you shouldn't vote for him. The same thing would of happened if Hilary had won though. Except you'd be called a misogynist. However if she had won, and I was American, I wouldn't of voted for her.

Do some people actually think the cover was an attack on the Obamas? That is shocking, how stupid would you have to be not to get a cartoon like that.

Antichrist, you are exactly right. In fact, I have seen some posts on other forums that I visit implying that Hilary lost the primary election because of misogyny. While that may have been a factor in some people's decision, it should not be used to discount every voter who chose not to vote for Hilary.

Perhaps that cartoon would have generated less of a controversy if it were on an inside page with an article about the misinformation on the net, i.e. he's a Muslim, Fox News calling the fist dap a "terrorist gesture," etc. On the cover, you run the real risk of one of these people seeing it, not getting it, and running home, "It's true, he's a Muslim terrorist! I just saw it on The New Yorker!"

Besides, he is just as white as he is black (biologically)
