The only reason slavery was tolerated for so long was because it's near impossible to run whole semi-industrial countries without complex machines like those that arose in the Industrial Revolution. Until those arose, slavery was pretty much necessary. Abhorrent, short-sighted, cruel, abominable, yes, but necessary. That's why the archetype of Jesus didn't stop it, that's why America engaged in it, that's why it's been a staple of civilization since the first state-level societies (and possibly earlier).
