You do realize that the 1970s weren't the 1950s? Homosexuality was just beginning to come into the mainstream during the mid/late 70s (and finally took the spotlight in the 80s), so it really isn't a shock that ONE show had a gay man in it.

Cops shows The Bill has had gay and lesbian coppers and
American's couldn't cope with British TV...
And all David Croft's programmes had gay characters such as
