What is a "Planet"?

The Greek root word "planao" means to go astray, wander or roam about. The Bible warns about false teachers who deviate from the truth of the Christian Faith. They are "wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever" (Jude 13).

Early astronomers chose the word "planet" to describe celestial bodies that seemed to deviate from simple rotation about the earth. According to modern theories, the earth is the third planet from the sun. The sun is just one mediocre star among billions. We live on a speck in a vast, impersonal universe. Really?

How do "Scientists" know that the Earth is Moving?

You tell me. Infidels scoff at the Bible by saying that the stars could not move quickly enough to circle our world daily. Well, if the globe is spinning rapidly, why doesn't our atmosphere spiral off? Atheists tell us that the earth is spinning, circling the sun, rotating with the galaxy AND rushing away from the big bang. And neither you nor I can
feel any motion!

The Senses don't Think!

Modern "science" is based on the false assumption that our five senses are the only path to truth. This is called "empiricism". But one does not think with his nose or eyes - not even with his brain. It is only the MIND that forms hypotheses, develops experiments and defends conclusions.

The Latin word scientia simply means "knowledge".(5) It is a prideful lie of modern unbelief that knowledge comes only through the senses. "...Avoiding ... oppositions of science falsely so-called" (1 Timothy 6:20), let us remember that "We have also a more sure word of prophesy; whereunto ye would do well to take heed, as unto a light that shineth is a dark place..." (1 Peter 1:19). The Bible is the manual prepared by our Creator to explain His universe to us. We should not ignore it to follow the fables of foolish men.

Astrologers define a planet as an object that moves relative to the fixed stars. By that definition, the sun and moon (and Pluto) are planets and the earth is not.

Astronomers have their own definition based on our modern understanding of the solar system. A planet is a body that:

(a) orbits the Sun,

(b) is large enough so that it is forced into a sphere by gravity, and

(c) has cleared its orbit of smaller objects.

By this definition the sun, moon and Pluto are not planets, and the earth is.

Pick one definition or the other. Get laughed at by scientists if you pick the first.

How do "Scientists" know that the Earth is Moving?

Stellar parallax. Look it up.

What the holy fuck? Where were you when the astronomers of the world were trying to determine a suitable definition of "planet"? Seriously, you could have saved them a hell of a lot of time if you'd just told them "stars = planets". Then again you'd have to redefine stars so I guess their way was better after all...

Yes. Really.

Gravity would be my guess but I'm no physicist.

Rational people say this, not just atheists.

You don't "feel" the Earth rotating because there's no frame of reference. In other words, you can't tell how fast the Earth is spinning without comparing it to something else. Without a frame of reference, absolute speed can't be determined.

If you're in a car going 70mph down the road, do you feel that you're going 70mph without looking out the windows? No. Well, there ya go. Same deal with the Earth.

A really funny series of fail! This all sounds like 3rd or 4th grade science. Did this dunce drop out of school VERY early, or what?

The atmosphere is affected by Earth's gravity, it too is held down, along with everything on Earth's surface.

When you travel by plane over the date line you either receive more time, or you loose more time than the actual travel takes.

I doubt that anyone is scoffing at the Bible. It was writen 6-4 thousand years ago, they didn't know about these things then.
What we are scoffing at is people of today who'd rather seek scientific knowledge in a 6000 year old book, than from today's scientists.

The senses send information to the brain, which then makes decisions based on this information. So the senses help the brain to think. The mind is situated in the brain.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the ancient Greeks also form knowledge (i.e. science) from the information of their senses? Are they also modern?

The Bible IS a compilation of fables of foolish men, from the Bronze age.

Ok, as a physics student, an engineer, and someone who is not a elementary school dropout, let me explain this.
1. The Atmosphere, We have left this planet, we have discovered that the escape velocity for earth is 11.2 Km/s, anything denser than helium cannot achieve that velocity without a chemical reaction.
2. Motion, Theory of relativity states that the motion of our frame of reference (in this case the gravity field of the planet known as earth) is indiscernible due to moving with the frame of reference, such as on a train moving at 20mph, a baseball thrown in the direction of motion will appear to anyone on the train to be moving only 5mph while anyone outside the train will see it as moving at 25mph.

Shut up. You're making non-empiricists look bad.

In the context of the rationalism vs. empiricism debate, rationalists believe that deductive reasoning can be a valid source of knowledge as well as empirical study.

The mistake you made here is twofold:

1. You confuse "deductive reasoning" with "gut feeling." Often, deductive reasoning will tell you the exact opposite of your gut feeling. Take the Monty Hall problem, for example. Gut feeling says you should keep the door you have. But deductive reasoning says you should switch doors. Saying "If the earth revolved around the sun, the atmosphere would spin off" is not deductive reasoning. It's thinking with your gut.

2. You think that deductive reasoning contradicts science. Science is based on math. Math is based on deductive reasoning. Science done well does not conflict with deductive reasoning done well. You are not doing deductive reasoning well. Actually, you're not doing it at all. You're thinking with your gut.
