Is the Iraq war even war? I always thought it was just a way for Bush to flaunt his power.

I think that, apart from the Russia-Georgia issue, you should add American foreign politics to the list of things you don't know much about and you can't have an opinion on.

And as we all know, McCarthy was the biggest communist sympathizer of all!

You're confusing numerical superiority with competence and ability. The US turned up late for the 2 world wars, when both had already been won by the Europeans and the Russians. They got their arses kicked in Vietnam and they sure as hell are taking a pasting in Iraq.
FFS, the US couldn't even win their war of independence from the UK without French help.
About the only war the US has won was when they invaded Grenada and even then they managed to shoot some of their own soldiers.

All I know is we shouldn't let Russia invade Georgia the way Sherman did 140 years ago. We must defend Atlanta and not let the Russkies burn it like Sherman did, especially with football season coming up. I love my Falcons! Just remember, the South wil rise again!

Let's not forget that a prisoner of war was more likely to be summarily (and illegally) executed by an American rather than a Brit during the Second World War. Long Live America, land of the free.

Surely, you never heard about Nixon, the guy who prolongued the war until he was caught with the Watergate scandal. Surely Kissinger may tell you how much "communist sympathiser" he was.

"As for the USA's military might, I think that history shows us as the greatest Army in the world since we've kicked everyone's ass in almost every war."
Me, channeling Henry Louis Mencken: "All [of the American's] foreign wars have been fought with foes either too weak to resist them or too heavily engaged elsewhere to make more than a half-hearted attempt. The combats with Mexico and Spain were not wars; they were simply lynchings."

We entered world war 2 when the Russians were getting their asses kicked. You are right about the first world war though and in ww2 we almost singlehandedly won in the pacific.

RBM: actually, I believe the Russians were pretty well holding their own on the eastern front. Western was pretty thoroughly clobbered, which is where we came in and lent a strong hand. I absolutely believe that we would have lost in the Pacific theater were it not for the a-bomb. Virtually every Japanese citizen was willing to give their lives before they surrendered. They only did because the bombings proved that we could take ALL of their lives without too much trouble.
AND WHY ARE THEY EVEN TALKING ABOUT THIS ON A LEGEND OF ZELDA FORUM?!?!

^Ah, you're right. I forgot about the winter offensive from the soviets. Of course when summer came along they took a pounding again until they got to stalingrad and we all know where it went from there.

@RBM: Actually, by the time of Stalingrad most of Russian manufacture had moved east of the Urals to where the Germans couldn't touch it. At that point, the fall of Germany was just a matter of time. By early 1944, Ural tank plants were building over 1000 T34s PER MONTH. Not even the US could maintain that kind of production.
As for the Pacific war, the only reason it was as difficult as it was for the US was the fanaticism of the Japanese and the prewar shortsightedness of the pols in Washington. Seen from the perspective of a history student outside the US, Mencken's statement rings very true. We appreciated your help in two world wars and in deterring the Soviets, but in the case of the world wars most other nations had been fighting for two years before you showed up. Of course we were tired!
Oh, and one more thing. The US was not going it alone in the planned invasion of Japan: look up Tiger Force. 1/3 of the troops for the invasion were to be British and other Commonwealth. We still would have won -- we had all the resources -- but it ould have been hella bloody.

"I really don't know enough about the conflict to have an opinion, so I have nothing to say on this issue"
It is said "Better to be a fool and keep your mouth shut than to open it and remove all doubt.". Your statement should have ended after that first line.
