[Sarah Michelle Geller blamed for rise in paganism]
Hollywood actress Sarah Michelle Gellar's hit show Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been blamed for 50,000 women abandoning traditional Western religion to study paganism.
According to the recent British study published in Women and Religion in the West, young women have taken an increased interest in practicing witchcraft after Gellar's hit U.S. TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer hit the mainstream.
The study's author Dr. Kristin Aune says: "Because of its focus on female empowerment, young women are attracted by Wicca, popularised by the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In short, women are abandoning the church."
The Church of England has declined to comment on the study.

So you're sorry that you got rid of the screaming, Spike-obsessed fangirls?
I'm sure the pagan's would gladly give them back to you.
@ Mister Spak: They like her on "How I Met Your Mother."
Seriously, if this is true, and all it took was a TV show to make them leave Christianity, well, that was a house of cards waiting for a light breeze anyway. This says more about their insecurities and flaws than anything else.
"Sarah Michelle Gellar's hit show Buffy the Vampire Slaye"
It wasn't her show, it was Josh Whedon's. Gellar just happened to be in it.
Sheesh, they'll blame everything but themselves. It's likely that this hyperbolic bullshit "study" is just fundie hand-wringing and a way of diverting people away from the real reason women are leaving the church - because religion stinks. These women probably got a clue and figured that they don't want to live under a doctrine that considers them nothing more than stupid broodmares and unpaid housekeepers.

Oh, but you see? Joss Whedon was a man , so they can't blame him! Therefore, they have to take it out on the female star of the show.
I thought paganism was the "traditional western religion".
50,000 women decided they have better things to do with their lives then. Good show.
If not one fictional empowered woman, they'll find another to blame. Never themselves though, never.
I gotta say, I'll take Buffy and Angel and Spike over this ill-tempered and cruel God fellow anyday.
But unfortunately, no matter how cool Whedon's works are, they're fictional. :(
Wicca has long been known to empower THE INDIVIDUAL. Not just the male sex of a certain species that monotheism tends to do. Granted, this doesnt make Wicca (polytheism) true or correct, but it does make it attractive in a patriarchal monotheistic & skewed society. I place the blame of that on your own religions refusal to acknowledge anyone lesser than its alpha choices.
I love strong women!
@toth: ~They're not as cute like everybody supposes
They've got those hoppy legs and twitchy little noses
And what's with all the carrots?
What do they need such good eyesight for anyway?
Bunnies! Bunnies, it must be bunnies!~
... I gotta find me a Buffy torrent now.

"[Chairman Kaga blamed for rise in pastafarianism]
Japanese actor Takeshi Kara's hit show Iron Chef has been blamed for 50,000 women chefs abandoning traditional Western cuisine to study pastafarianism.
According to the recent Chinese study published in Women chefs and cuisine in the West, young women chefs have taken an increased interest in practicing pastacraft after Kaga's hit Japanese TV show Iron Chef hit the mainstream.

Fixed
The Church of England at least, has a higher degree of common sense.
Wicca is a FAR older religion than christianity and far more in tune with humanity and its relationship with nature.
All the horrific stories of witchcraft originated from a mud-slinging campaign by the early christian church to encourage us to convert. When that didn't work, we were forced to convert.
It is the ignorance, arrogance and bigotry of fundie christianity that is driving away your sheeple, and not Buffy, Harry Potter or LOTR. Blame yourself, but IMO paganism is far closer to reality than a book written by ancient goat-sodomisers.
"..abandoning traditional Western religion to study paganism"?
Um, paganism IS traditional Western religion. Christianity is a MIDDLE-EASTERN death cult.
Why blame Sarah Michelle Gellar? Blame the creator of the series, Joss Whedon, or Alison Hannigan, who plays Willow the witch.
Yeah, and we can't have female empowerment! How then can we force the women to stay by the stove to cook and have babies? If Christianity had more strong female figures it would appeal to more young and strong women. Easy-peasy.
So they leave "Western" religions, like Christianity, (Middle East), to join the heathen pagans (who I believe have been in the West all along).
Yeah.
Buffy had more crucifixes than most Christians do.
Most young women know full well that witchcraft is fictional. Anyway; in the show it was mostly a metaphor for sex...
"The inward eye, the sightless sea, Ayala flows through the river in me."
You know, Wicca is one o those rare religions I can actually genuinely respect. They never hurt anyone, they never bother me at 5 in the morning, they uplift the female form to divine status (I'm a dude, btw), and they never start bloody campaigns in the name of their Goddess.
A case of confounding the actress and the character, I see...
Plus, it was Willow Rosenberg, played by Alyson Hannigan, who was the witch, and it was Joss Whedon who created both characters. Blame him!
I think I became even more atheistic after watching the series.
If women are abandoning the church and seeking female empowerment, it's easy to see what the church ought to do; put forward the women in the Bible. No, not the meek ones like virgin Mary and Eve, the independent ones, like Lilith, Rebecca, Mary Magdalene, Judith, Jael, etc.
The Church of England isn't stupid enough to comment on tripe like this.
Confused?
