How come there were no open atheists during Salem witch trials?

Atheists are generally too intelligent to ask to be killed.
Instead, they belong to the "yeah, whatever" church. I know, it's insincere, but WTF is a dude to do?
"How come there were no open atheists during Salem witch trials?"
Boy, now that there is a conundrum if I ever saw one. I'll have to go chew on that for a while.
Q: Why did those witch trials stop?
A: Because the wife of the Massachusetts governor, Lady Mary Phips, was accused of witchcraft. Up until that point, Governor William Phips was such a devout christian that he was content to let the tortures and murders continue in the name of a loving and merciful god but, once his wife was accused, he decided enough was enough and brought it all to a close.
Oh, lets see shall we. Here's a little situation sketch:
Mob: "You there, are you christian?"
victim 1: "No, I'm not, I believe in nature and... Hey, wait! put me down! Aargh, the fire! It burns! AAAARRRGHH.
Mob: "What about you then, are you christian?"
Victim 2: "No, I'm an atheist, that... Hey, put me down! What's that heavy lead ball for? I can't swim like this! Nooo....."
Mob: "An you there, are you christian?"
Victim 3: "No I... Uhhh... Yeah I am, Praise the lord an all that"
HOW COME CHRISTIANS GET MAD WHEN I KICK THE CRAP OUT OF JESUS?
WHAT, THAT'S A REAL QUESTION, THAT'S WHY THEY HAVE YAHOO ANSWERS!
Because they knew the religious fanatics would kill them horribly in the name of a "loving" god - that only loves itself.
BTW, every single one the the "witches" that perished were found to have been falsely accussed.
Salem is now the center of the Wiccan community in the USA, and THAT is a religion more in touch with humanity than christianity can ever be.
There probably where, on top of the cinder...
Most non-dogmatic were probably scared silent, not many would speak up if it means a death sentence, effective immediately.
For the same reason there were rather few open communists during the McCarthy era. Allthough the "death" at this time was social and professional, not physical. Except for the ones committing suicide.
Confused?
