To suggest that his actions were wrong would be the equivalence of allowing female gang members to strap guns to their chests in differing checkerboard patterns to not only signify their alleigances, but also to allow felons the same self-defense rights hardworking Heartland Americans do.

In the military, usually only officers or MPs carried sidearns. However when you are driving a tank you have to immediately take out anyone that manages to get onto the deck of the tank. If you are in a small hatch, a chest holster with a .45 is the best instant response. I have yet to figure out why they never issued us any left-handed chest holsters.
As for the checkerboard patterns, I'm completely clueless.

Taking the kindliest view, any male teacher who feels he has to do this is probably having a breakdown. Taking a less kindly, more pratical view, where I live such behaviour would constitute technical assault, and subject the perpetrator to a jail term and a hefty fine for each instance.
As to anyone carrying on like this being a martyr, there are those who would wonder where falls the borderline between martyr and pervert.
