Why does it seem that a lot of atheist wish that America will do away with Christianity?
I read your comments and answers and it seems you are bitter and afraid of living in a Christian nation.

It scares me to think that you wish to get rid of religion in our powerful nation.

Why dont you just accept the fact that this country is ruled by people with Christian values and we respect you, but we wont just give in and let you take over and ruin our faith in our lord JESUS CHRIST!!

And it scares me that our government is full of people with such a weak grasp of reality and a weak sense of purpose that they require religious superstition to grant them comfort. That our nation's power is directed by people who have no idea why they think that their religion is the only correct answer to the question of our existence, but are adamant enough about it to impose laws based upon it.

I accept that the country is ruled by people with "Christian values". I just decline to admit that "Christian values" are ones worth having, and that you have "respect" for anything at all outside of your own religous traditions.

Oh, let's try the Ray Comfort standard - the 10 condiments - er, 10 commandments!

- No other gods... sorry, they all break this rule. Lobbyists prove as much...

- No graven images... well now, some of them do like to hang Jesus pictures, but those are verbotten...

- No taking Lord's name in vain... Oh, how many times has Bush violated this one? And now Palin is going at it too, worse than Bush!

- Honor Father and Mother - another one that the current prez breaks consistently.

- Keep Sabbath - let's move right along and not even go there, k'? Cause you really don't want to know how many politicians spend Sundays out of church, and when they do go, go because they're pandering for votes.

- No kill - I guess if you don't actually hold the knife/gun, it doesn't count, right? But if God's counting you ordering killing, well then...

- No steal - Again, let's not bother going there, we'll nail just about everyone in DC.

- No adultery - Oh boy, let's keep moving...

- No false witness - It's election season, so once again we need to move right along...

- No covet - I'd say let's move along but we're at the end of the list already.

I don't wish that America would do away with Christianity, I wish religious people would do away with religions.

I would not be in favor a laws to perscute the religious as that approach never works, I just wish those who believe in ridiculous things would grow up and join us here in reality.

Why would it be scary for the people of a powerful nation to run their affairs based on evidence and reason?

We don't accept that this nation is ruled by people with Christian values because there is no universally applicable definition of Christian values. Many of those values claimed by Christians are essentially universal values. Many Christians don't hold to their professed values of love and fairness.

And, as said before, I don't want to ruin your faith in JESUS CHRIST!!, I want you to do that by understanding the evidence against such faith.

- You obvious haven't thought this through. Christians try to impose their beliefs and way of life on people who are not interested, or who would find it burdensome. If Christians kept their religion private, or let others live their lives free from condemnation and restriction there wouldbe no problem. Christians draw the loathing of others down on their own heads because they believe that everyone should be like them and believe and behave as they do. That is tyranny.

- For the reasons given above, it probably would be best if Christianity were to vanish into thin air. I doubt Christians, with the missionary zeal and interference in the political life of any country where they are strong enough to make it felt, could keep from trying to gain power. So much for 'My kingdom is not of this world.'! The adjective 'powerful' gives the game away. That is what your game is - a quest for Christian power - after you have wiped out every other brand of Christian that doesn't match exactly your version. Kind of you to drop that hint.

- I don't wish to comment on another country beyond saying that Christianity is not, de jure, a sine qua non for election to Congress in the USA. It well may be required, de facto, to get elected in the first place, which highlights what I said in my first paragraph above. Frankly America is almost a Theocratic Empire at this point.

- Believe as you will. That is your right. You become obnoxious when you force your beliefs, directly (Witnessing) or indirectly (through law) on others to the limitation of their freedoms or their consciences.

Really? Well here is how one of your Christian 'rulers' respects us.

No? Well how about some 'respect' from the Bush Sr. appointed Secretary to Department for Veteran Affairs, as shown in this reply to a complaint of discrimination against atheist veterans.

So, this is the so-called 'respect' Christian rulers have for us; we're not patriots, we're not citizens and we should do the right thing and believe in God.

Fortunately, America is not a 'Christian Nation', it is a nation of (predominantly) Christians. Even more fortunately, the authors of the constitution knew better than to rely on the good will, innate justice or fair play of the Christian majority not to terrorise, intimidate or those oppress other faiths, or lack thereof.

However much fundies might whinge and cry about 'persecution', there is no greater bully in American politics today than the Religious Right.

That's part of the problem--you're scared of other people's beliefs. Scared voters are easily manipulated, you know.

I don't want to get rid of religion--I just want to keep it out of politics and government. It's a personal decision anyway--politicians shouldn't be involved.

Fundies DON'T respect people who disagree with them; they want abortion banned & punished by death; they want gays shipped off to camps or executed; they want forced, mandatory prayer in schools; they want teaching of evolutionary science banned & replaced with creationism; and they want women to be subservient to men. That isn't respect. And America isn't 'ruled' by Christians; that's just a myth you fundies want to promote. The hatred you fundies express toward those who dare to disagree is sickening.
