Individuals and institutions, religious and otherwise, begin to lose respect the day they decide that respect is an entitlement and not something that is earned. There are many Christians who actively work to promote the social gospel, and while I do not agree with their motivations I respect their efforts. Fundamentalists, by contrast, tend to engage in lying, bullying and other despicable practices which prevent me from having any respect for them at all.
While we're at it, I also have no respect for wild eyed yahoos who think that colorful swearing and the gross misuse of words like "liberal" is a substitute for articulate and cohesive expression.
