Quote# 48362

Did you know that 52 of the 55 signers of "The Declaration of Independence" were orthodox, deeply committed, Christians? The other three all believed in the Bible as the divine truth, the God of scripture, and His personal intervention. It is the same Congress that formed the American Bible Society, immediately after creating the Declaration of Independence, the Continental Congress voted to purchase and import 20,000 copies of Scripture for the people of this nation.

Actually, quite a few of them were deists, meaning there was a god who created the earth, and now he's sitting on a happy cloud not giving a shit about what we get up to.

not exactly scripture.

"Did you know that 52 of the 55 signers of "The Declaration of Independence" were orthodox, deeply committed, Christians?"

No, because I know that to be untrue.

"The other three all believed in the Bible as the divine truth, the God of scripture, and His personal intervention."

That, too, is a blatant lie.

"It is the same Congress that formed the American Bible Society, immediately after creating the Declaration of Independence, the Continental Congress voted to purchase and import 20,000 copies of Scripture for the people of this nation."

And, that's untrue as well. Three strikes and you're out, bonehead.

Ben Franklin: "Lighthouses are more useful than churches."

Thomas Jefferson: "No priest-ridden country has ever succeeded..."

George Washington: "I don't care if they're jews, christians, mussulmen, heathens or atheists. Can they do the work?"

These gentlemen carried the predominant opinion.

The stupid thing is that even if this was true, and the Founding Fathers were all commited Christians, it wouldn't make an iota of difference to the fact that they set up a secular state with freedom of (and from) religion.

So what? Even if it's true, they still wrote "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". Just because they may have been Christians doesn't mean they thought everyone else who had a different opinion needed to knuckle under to their beliefs. The negative result of that kind of thinking is exactly why they left England in the first place.
