I'm so sick of this argument. Big name atheists of today pretend to ride in valiantly on their white steeds to rescue us from the horrible fantasy of religion for the betterment of mankind. They need to read a history book.
I say bring back the Friedrich Nietzsche style atheists, at least he was honest about the unavoidable bloodshed in which atheistic philosophy results.

Well to be honest, I would really like to see a "big name atheist" with the balls to actually do this kind of shit.
So.
Secular democratic countries with lots of atheists (Japan, Nordic countries): Peaceful, prosperous, rank high on HDI.
Secular dictatorships with lots of repressed religious people (such as the USSR): Horrific, rank among the worst dictatorships ever.
So how does the USSR prove atheism is bad?
There is, and will be bloodshed in the name of whatever, and whoever the one in power wants...

Yes, abolishing religion would be better for mankind. In fact, I would bet we almost agree on this point. I am sure that you want to abolish all religion except one...and that is whatever delusion christian sect that you KNOW to be the one true calling. Go one step further, you can do it.

Well, in the case of some atheists, he is right about the "need to read a history book". But, his last sentence...moronic. It pretty much shows that he knows nothing about the history of atheism, or about anything Friedrich Nietzche said, ironically immediately after condemning some unknown fringe of atheists for doing the same thing. You can't condemn broadbrushing when you do the same damn thing yourself.

You're thinking of Hobbes. He was the "war of all against all" guy. Nietzsche was a fairly optimistic guy, in a lot of ways; practicing Overmen qualities was something he believed anyone could do, if they really put their mind to it and understood what they sought.
