Evolution is scientific fact? I will need more then you vouching for it. Who has tested evolution? Evolution may have been sucessful in debate with religion but evolution as Scientific FACT. I'm not convinced.

It's interesting you bring up Gravity. A force not seen and the effects can be tested and observed and measured but you are correct. How do you prove gravity? Science says it is the natural attraction of one body (of mass) to another. Science can explain what it is...but cannot explain WHY it is. It is just there and it just happens. We all take it for granted because it JUST IS.

Science can explain only so much and then it still takes a certian amount of faith to believe that we will wake up tomorrow and gravity will still be there.

So is Gravity superstition?

Suddenly a skeptic, are we? Science does not need to explain "why" evolution/gravity happens, because merely knowing that it does happen, how it happens, and what contributes to it is sufficient. And it does take "faith" to assume that natural laws will behave as they always have. But it is faith that is based on actual experience of said consistency that we have faith in.

Very clever attempt at trying to make the conflict of science and religion a wash. But it doesn't change the fact that gravity, as a description of an observable phenomenon, is simply not on par with actual superstitions when it comes to unverifiability (or outright error).

Actually, you are wrong. Newton said that gravity was the natural attraction of one body to another. Unlike religion however, the fundamentals of Newton were put to the test, over and over and over again. What scientists found were just a few things that did not fit the predictions from Newton Laws. One example is the motion of Mercury, it did not do what Newton's math said it should. This went unsolved until some guy named Einstein came along and improved upon Newton's theories and said that, in fact, bodies do not attract one another, rather mass warps space. Gravitational attraction is really straight line motion (Newtonian) in curved space. So there is your why douchebag, it has nothing to do with faith. Even if we didn't know "why" or "how" or anything else, it is only because we do not yet know, and it does not lend credibility to the supernatural.

And yes, evolution is a fact in the same sense that the Earth orbits the sun is a fact.

This is where you're viewing the world thru fundie colored lens is messing you up. Gravity will be there tomorrow because our understanding of it is based solely on evidence and no faith is required.

Countless biologists all over the world. Every pharmaceutical company that's ever existed. Anyone who's ever fought off the flu only to catch a different strain next time around.

That's a few examples.

Arguments from personal incredulity are meaningless. Reality does not have to bend to your whim.

Apparently the bizarre notion of gravity that you have is simply superstition. For the rest of us, gravity can't simply disappear one day as it's an inherent property of the fucking universe.

The Honourable Judge John E. Jones III was extremely convinced by the defence's evidence/testimony, yessiree. So much so, in fact, that he found for the [i]plaintiffs[/i], thus completely annhilating the Creationists' last, best hope in gaining any kind of credibility for their educational agenda.

Sooooooo... you want to take it up with him personally? I mean, it's not as if he's gonna take you to court for saying he's a liar to his face, seeing as allegations of perjury are an extremely serious offence in the eyes of the court, nosiree! [/hyper-sarcasm]

So we Atheists can not only say 'We have the fossils. We win', we have the law itself on our side, to back up what we say. And remember: Courts of Law will only accept hard, solid, provable facts, with evidence, to back up a case. I'm afraid your Bible that claims to be 'Truth' - with it's at best third-hand eyewit(l)ess testimonies (which are notoriously unreliable, and therefore are inadmissable in court) - can never stand up to legal scrutiny.

I reckon that's what you fundies are really terrified of: a 'Reverse-Scopes Monkey Trial'. In which fundamentalist Christianity is put on trial for it's very existence. Because when it's pastors et al can't prove - to the satisfaction of the prosecutor(s), judge & jury - of their 'God's existence...! >:D
