Question for fellow Christians. Matthew Shepard?

I am requesting that ONLY Bible believing Evangelical Christians answer this.

I was watching a segment on the "Crime and Investigation" network on the death of Matthew Shepard.
The first thought that came to my mind was "if he had accepted Jesus Christ into his life then he would have not been gay and then this wouldn't have happened to him". I do not condone violence, but I can't help but feel that if he had been following God's will that he would still be alive today and living a nice life.

Someone tell me that you feel this way too.
