Your sister's beliefs don't make sense, even from a logical standpoint. OK, so pretend for a moment that there's no Hell.....if that's the case, what did Jesus hang on a cross to keep us away from? If there's no Hell, what did we need saving from?

If there's no Hell, what did we need saving from?
By the Living and Flaming Christ, he's so close.
There's no hell, there's no jesus, there's no crucifixtion of a man-god, so there's no need to be saved from anything.
"Your sister's beliefs don't make sense, even from a logical standpoint. OK, so pretend for a moment that there's no Hell"
Wait a minute, belief in hell makes sense? And, what standpoint is there from which to make sense other than logical?
"if that's the case,"
Psst. It's not.
"what did Jesus hang on a cross to keep us away from?"
If the biblical Jesus even existed, I can't think of a good reason why he was hung on a cross. Some bloak being nailed to a board 2 thousand years ago should in no way effect whether or not there is a hell.
"If there's no Hell, what did we need saving from?"
Nothing. I rest my case.
You wouldn't know a logical standpoint if it bit you on the arse.
"If there's no Hell, what did we need saving from?"
Death. that's one possibility which makes that person's sister's beliefs make sense.
I know you RR don't actually read the whole Bible so can I point a bit out to you?
JOHN 3:16 - it's only one of the most quoted verses in the whole Bible. I'm surprised you haven't heard of it.
The thread goes on to say:
Hell, regardless of whether or not there is actual fire, is eternal separation from God.
Doesn't sound bad at all. I've already booked my ticket.
Maybe it's because I was raised by a Unitarian and I'm a wannabe writer, but I always assumed that the point of the Jesus story was that, rather than actually "taking sins into himself" and then dying to somehow atone for everyone else and keep them out of Hell (which is morally bankrupt on so many levels), his death was simply a symbolic martyrdom; a death to show everyone that he really, truly meant all of the nice things he said and that he was willing to die to uphold them. Thus, winning more converts and, in theory, making them nice people.
The idea that you're okay with the idea that Jesus was just a scapegoat for humanity is sickening.
Not that I believe in Hell, God or Jesus (certainly the gospel character of Jesus in any case), but y'know. Whatever.
our low instincts?
Our lack of love?
Our lack of compassion?
Tha fact we refuse to see each human being as our brother?
Oh, yep, we're perfect, we just need some big grill to scare us for no reason
"if that's the case, what did Jesus hang on a cross to keep us away from? If there's no Hell, what did we need saving from? "
God's incompetent software design in v1.0?
"If there's no Hell, what did we need saving from?"
Nothing, he was hanged because some assbites didn't agree with his love messages.
"If there's no Hell, what did we need saving from?"
Beginning to ask the right question, even if rhetorical.
If there is no Hell, then there would be no savior. The savior doesn't exist, nor did he ever exist, because Hell doesn't exist.
From what Paul said, it wasn't the crucifixion that did the saving. It was the resurrection.
You'd be better off asking "If there's no Hell, why did Jesus need to be resurrected?".
Why do you think we need saving anyway? to me this whole idea of people being in need of salvation is one of the most repugnant beliefs of Christianity (not the fundie religion though, that has much worse beliefs, but I'm talking about normaly, main street christianisy).

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
YES...you made my whole week.
I know this is from a while ago, but seriously...I HAD to post my appreciation.
If there's no Hell, what did we need saving from?
I dunno, maybe Jesus wasn't actually hung up because people needed saving? That could've simply been a metaphorical interpretation of his death that came after the fact.
Confused?
