My daughter was told by her high school Biology teacher at the start of this year, 'If any of you don't believe in evolution, you should leave my class now.' She left. Evolution is *not* a scientific theory as it is neither disprovable nor provable. It is a position or viewpoint taken up by those who wish to not believe that 'In the beginning, God made ...'

I am quite content that there are people who wish to believe in evolution over creation. But, they should stop calling it 'science' and be honest: it is a 'credo', an 'I believe in ...' kind of position.

From my viewpoint, as a three-times graduate, the problem is that Biologists push evolutionism beyond what is scientifically reasonable. No-one can prove anything they believe as no-one was there when it happened. A good Historian would warn them of this.

I heard a BBC radio programme last week on the evolution of singing, and its purposes. It was as scientific as a blog from the extreme wing of creationism. It was speculation predicated on evolutionism packaged up as facts.

As a Christian, I believe that I already know why people can sing: in order to praise The LORD God who made heaven and earth. No amount of pseudo-science from the evolutionists can change that.

And, if evolutionists insists on teaching atheist evolutionary ideas, they should not be surprised that the smartest kids (which kids from religious backgrounds often are) opt out of their classes.

You and your daughter both can sit and listen to a diffrent viewpoint than your own. I do it all the time. It will not kill you.

It IS scientific theory because theory can be backed up by evidence.
No it has not been proven, but neither has gravity.

Okay, a high school teacher should not be giving ultimatums. Ideally, the teacher would work with the creationists students in either some kind of compromise (read the book and answer the questions, go home and believe what you want), or find a way to reach out to the students. Less ideally, the teacher could flunk the students when assignments or tests are not completed.

Being smart is not exclusive to atheists nor theists. Without critical thinking skills and education, being smart is not enough. You've made it so your daughter is vulnerable to con artists. Way to go!

Not all uses of the word evolution are equal but that does not throw out the ToE.

Seriously, it's scary, but those qualifications might be real. There are fundies in UK universities. Kids straight from school, feeling a bit scared in this new environment, are a prime target for hard-line evangelists. I found myself at a wedding once. Two bright, likeable kids, each well into a Ph.D, both born again at university. It's the only wedding I've known where both bride and groom stood up in the middle of the service and told everybody how they'd both found Jesus. And then we were treated to a sermon on the everlasting torment which awaited those unfortunates who didn't know the Lord...

If religious kids were that smart then they would be able to point out the obvious fallacies and contradictions in the bible.

How are the students supposed to believe in something that they have not been properly educated about? That's doing a huge disservice to the children (at least make an attempt to get through to them). When I was in school there was this one kid who got vocal when evolution was brought up and then started squirming around in his chair and shaking his head (his father was so extreme that he believed witches were real and told his son where they lived in all seriousness). However, the teacher had a way of explaining that even if he did not believe it to be true, he had to learn about it. As a result, he eventually quieted down and did the work. I don't think his opinion ever changed in the time I knew him, but he was a bright kid despite the brainwashing and I sort of hope he was able to use his intelligence to find some middle ground. However, at the very least, he has a basic understanding of what he was told not to believe in and/or can possibly move beyond that bury your head in the sand approach to other things in life. The idea that you shouldn't learn something because you don't believe it, is completely backwards thinking and just promotes continued ignorance.

I believe in evolution in the same way that I believe that a triangle has three sides. You don't need "belief" to understand evolution or algebra: You either understand it or you don't.

Evolution is 100% a scientific theory, based on humongous mountains of evidence. It is also certainly disprovable. Find one example of an organ in nature that is irreducubly complex and, TA DA, you have disproven evolution. Oh, by the way, the few biologist who are still religious nut jobs have been trying for years to do just that, using the eyeball aand echolocation in bats as examples, and have been served warm plates of epic fail in all instances.

Singing to praise the lord? Are you fucking serious? Is it your position that no one could sing in ancient Greece? While I didn't hear the show you are talking about my guess is that it was on the evolution of singing in birds, which is a truly fascinating topic if you would take your head out of your ass and learn about it.
