[Why do christians think they control marraige when people still have to get a marriage license from the state?]
Marriage between a man and woman is symbolic with the relationship between a believer and Jesus Christ. It is not to be tainted.

Getting together with a woman and raising children in an (idealistically) stable household... Is symbolic of a guy getting nailed to a tree because he thought it would be good for us?
Or us worshiping said overenthusiastic tree-hugger? I mean, I worship my ladyfriend day and night, but not because I want to hang her over the fireplace...
Well, you have fun with that.
The government still has marriage, and no legitimate secular reason to ban same-sex marriages.
(Insert obligatory "Bride of Christ" joke here.)
Also, your pretexts reasons get more desperate by the day.

Is Jesus the man or the woman in this tortured relationship? If Jesus is the man, will he buy me roses and lingerie? He damn well better put a big rock on my finger if He expects me to put out. I guess I should get busy shaving my legs, chest, and armpits. I hope Jesus is willing to spring for the laser hair removal treatments necessary to get rid of my facial hair.
Like Solomon did, or is that just the equivalent of Jesus and the congregation?
@SWGM
Please. We all know the Son of God would be a total top.
So you are basically saying that marriage didn't exist before christianity? The institution of marriage predate chritianity and it's precedant religions, and it's found in cultures that did not embrace christianity until the last 200 years or so. How can marriage be symbolic of a christian concept when it existed long before it?
It boils down to the fact that you think your religious beliefs make you superior and as such that you and your co-religionists should be able to dictate how those that you percive as inferior are to conduct themselves.
Fine, then don't have your church perform gay marriages. No one is making you. But let homosexuals be able to marry in the courts, or in their own churches and other religious constructs, if that's what they want. How do you know god isn't gay? And using the bible doesn't count, it's already shown to be goatshit.
Jesus + a believer = a married couple???
Jesus: Honey, get me a beer!
Believer: you didn't notice my haircut!
it's, true that Christians shouldnt (and dont) have the final word in marriage law. but we have every right to vote based off our beliefs, just as everyone else does. based off christian belief, same sex marriage is a sin. its not a worse sin than any other sin (and those very vocal 'christians' who think it is worse make it a lot harder for others to give their thoughts without being totally shut down), but it IS sin in our religion. no one should expect us to support something that against our beliefs, just as i cannot hope to make you support what is against yours. i could try to change what you believe, but that is different form making you go against your beliefs.
So when you bone your wife, what part of you relationship with Jesus does that symbolise?
#817216 - yeah, but in you religion sins also include wearing mixed fabrics, not being circumcised, having long hair, having short hair etc etc. I assume you keep to every instruction from the Bbile? You murder your disobedient children etc?
By that reasoning, anyone who isn't a christian shouldn't be allowed to get married. But here's reality, not everyone who gets married in this country is a christian, or believes in the christian symbolism of such. So your explaination fails, big time.
Confused?
