[Why did God create trillions of planets that serve no purpose?
There are trillions of planets that will never be capable of sustaining life...why did he create them?]
They are an expression of his glory. He wants us to look at how small we are, how big the universe is, and be amazed that God is even bigger.

So let me get this straight... There's an all-powerful being... Right... okay...
And this all powerful being needs us to know how tiny we are in comparison.
So that we can praise it for being so 'big'
Because otherwise it will hate us.
Sounds like your god has an awful lot of self-esteem issues for something supposedly all-powerful and wise. Maybe he has a penis that's as small as he's powerful? Or maybe god is just a construct made up by small-penis'd goat herders trying to feel big by association, who needed to feel like they were controlling all the 'sheep'.
So, the point of your all-powerful deity in making the entire universe was just to go "Neener, neener, neener!" to humanity?
That's not amazing. Any universe can spawn a zillion planets and have only one sustaining life.
It would be a REAL testament to God's glory if there was nothing in the universe besides us, and a constellation reading, "Got it right the first time"

You'd think Jehovah would have left us more hints than a universe holding no trace of His existence and a 3,000 year old book written by Bronze Age primitives. Maybe He needs a good publicist.
If this was the case, wouldn't the universe be much smaller? What's the point in all the billions and billions of planets and stars that we can't see? They serve no purpose, according to your viewpoint. And how do you know all these planets cannot, have not, or will not support life? That's a pretty arrogant statement to make.
Antichrist is right. The universe described in the Bible ends a few hundred miles above our heads, with tiny stars attached to the underside of a dome.
You'd think if the Word of God wanted us to see an expression of His glory, it would've described a bigger universe.
Yeah, and if God exists, I bet he has a "Mary" in every port, so to speak.
And God's number one chat-up line is...
"Hey baby, you are looking immaculate! Let me whip out my "tower of Israel" and show you why they call me the god of lurrvvv!"
*BADUM-TISH!*
"He wants us to look at how small we are, how big the universe is, and be amazed that God is even bigger."
And what God wants - God gets.

He did not create them, since he does not exist, nor ever has existed. However they are a wonderful aphordisiac in the night sky and have made my lust for having meaningless sex with ditzy Christian women much easier.
How to win an argument fundy style:
Just say, "goddidit".
This response trumps any scientific evidence or erudite argument.
...... At least in Fundyland.
Uh huh. I notice you drew an arbitrary limit to just how many stars and planets exist out there, but conveniently left out the fact that there's life as close as Jupiter.
To say nothing at all of what it says about our ego to believe God did it all just to show us how completely special we are to him, and His ego in making sure we stand in awe of it.
One of the purposes of religion and myths is indeed to attempt to give purpose to things that may not necessarily have one. An interesting thing is that they also tend to put back humans in the center of the universe, to justify a supposed special divine and human relationship, also purpose. <sarcasm>But the universe is chaos, I worship His Divine Shadow (Lexx reference).</sarcasm>
Confused?
