UNITED NATIONS, New York: Saudi Arabia, which deploys a special police force to ensure that only one narrow sect of Islam predominates in the kingdom, is sponsoring a discussion at the United Nations on religious tolerance starting Wednesday.

Thanks for making my point Lurk Mohr...Bill Mahr said it best: Our religious loons are funny, theirs are dangerous.

We have had a handful of isolated incidents of abortion clinic bombings (and not one for quite some time). When they happen even most religious loons condemn them.

In Islam horrific crimes are not only routine, but they are celebrated. Yes christian fundies are a nuisance. And when they try to legislate their religious believes they must be opposed. But to equate some nutjob whining about new world order and spouting off on evolution with an entire culture that glorifies suicide bombings, executions, and theocracy is simply wrong.

The fact is their nuts are FAR Worse than ours. That may not be PC< but it is clearly a fact.

Took me all of 5 minutes on google to find those. The bottom line is the fundy christians are right on one thing (yes even a broke clock is right twice a day), atheists do seem to have a bug up our ass about CHRISTIANS...and tend to give the other religions a pass...even when they are as far out or farther than the christians.

It'd be fair to give us a hard time for bias if we were actually biased- if we actually preferred Muslim nonsense to evangelical nonsense for instance- but we aren't. We not only mock fundamentalist arrogance in Christian Fundamentalist, and Muslim Fundamentalists- but even atheist dogmatic ignorance. (Not that we're always right). Hell, even 'Old Viking' got posted here- great company for you when you think that some idiots even posted you here.
Speaking for myself, I'm lazy.
We take the easy shots that are in front of us. This is a humour site, not a philosophy site.

Can you provide a specific example of a horrific crime being celebrated by Muslims in the US?

Many Muslims live in the US, yet we haven't had a fraction of the sectarian violence that the Middle East has seen over the years. Not even close. Perhaps Islam itself isn't the source of the violence?

If western culture is predominantly Christian, doesn't it stand to reason that most of the fundies we'd encounter would be Christians?

I think that you're wrong on a couple of points here.

First, FSTDT is not an atheist site. I'll concede that there are many atheists here--but there are many non-atheists as well. Myself, for one. :)

Secondly--other religions do not get a pass here. This post is about Islam. There have been others.

If Christian fundies are the butt of many of the jokes here on FSTDT, it's because they're also prevalent in our society.

If you feel that Islamic fundamentalism is being under-represented, please feel free to contribute quotes. I, for one, think that it would make the place more interesting.

As for, "Why pick on Christians?" Think of it as a reverse slippery slope. Most of us prefer to work where there's a ghost of a chance of getting some traction ...and some laughs. Since many of us were raised in some Christian-denominated environment, we are more familiar with the absurdities of that religion. Finally, 'Why not?' Just because a pedophile is not a murderer, that doesn't mean he shouldn't go to jail. Similarly, fucking with someone's mind until only a river of nonsense flows there is still criminal without the beatings.

Citation please... or are you saying that the few extreme events are commonplace? If you are, then we can say that the handful of abortion clinic bombings is not only routine but celebrated...

Don't accuse us of doing something, then go right ahead and do it yourself... it's a sure-fire way to show that you're a hypocrite and not worth taking seriously.

But it's only the extremists who do that... just like the CHRISTIAN extemists glorify the exact same thing!

Only a handful of Muslims do what you accuse all of them of doing... in accusing all of them, you do exactly what all Fundes do. Find something that is wrong, then accuse an entire section of humanity of doing it... like a lot of fundies accuse Homosexuals of being kiddie-fuckers. It's wrong of them to do that, and it's wrong of you to do it to Muslims.

And no, our religious loons aren't funny... there've got enough respectability to subvert the very society we live in, converting it slowly into a society that would resemble the one in Saudi Arabia, and they do it slowly enough that we don't notice until it's too late... but that's obviously not dangerous, is it?

The most dangerous are not those who are visible, making huge changes... but those who are subtle, the ones making small changes that you think are fine, until you get to the point you no longer recognise the society you live in.
