They don't have to..

That isn't mandatory.

a we mainly affirm ("I do solomnly, seriously, really attest and state that my testimony will be the truth, whole truth, and nothing but the truth")

b didn't Christ say "let your 'yea' stand for 'yea', 'nay' for 'nay'"?

Why would a Christian tell the truth when he can lie his ass off and still go to heaven?

11/19/2008 10:12:34 PM

Because if we lie we get tossed in prison?

a mind far far away

Um...most atheists are honest. Just because a fundy can put his hand on the bible, lie through his teeth, and keep a straight face, doesn't mean others are that immoral. Matter of fact, an atheist doesn't need to swear on the bible to tell the truth, they do it just because it's the right thing to do.

Good question. Fortunately we can simply swear to the truth of our testimony without all the other theatrics. Not very fundie, really.

Incidentally, Nixon swore on *two* Bibles at his inauguration, which obviously made him an honest man.

Before you sit on the stand, you have the choice of what to swear on, if anything at all, and the court has to oblige within reason.

Aboriginals have eagle feathers, Muslims have the Koran, Jews have the Torah, and atheists simply raise their right hand and swear they will tell the truth.

Darwin's Lil Girl

For one, I know the punishment for perjury. Secondly, I can choose to swear on my honour if I wish.

Why tell the truth in court? Oh I don't know, maybe it's because perjury is illegal?

Putting one's hands on a bible to ensure truthfulness apparently means jack shit to atheists and fundies equally.

You don't have to put your hand on a Bible. You just kinda wave it away, or you tell someone beforehand, or you point to the bit of non-Christian religious jewelry that you pretty much always wear (like my pentacle) and give a meaningful look. My brohter and I both had opportunities to find this out firsthand.

As opposed to someone who can put their hand on the Bible, lie, and then ask for forgiveness later?

Being forced to mention God would be a violation of the established clause. That phrase can just be removed.

perjury is illegal.

"so help your god?"

Nice try, idiot. It's "so help me God". The court and jury would catch that one fast.

And you're right, the Bible means nothing to Atheists, so stop insisting on it's dominance withing a system that doesn't recognize it.

Dumb fuck can't even spell atheist.
