Studies have shown that cultures with taboos about nudity have MUCH higher rates of sexual crime. It is only because of attitudes like yours, that the natural human body is somehow "wrong", that such problems are as rampant as they are.

Perverts act as they do because they grew up like you. They are forced to repress their sexuality and must treat nudity as taboo. As such, it becomes an obsession.

Nudity is only a big deal to you and the perverts your mindset creates because you shield yourself from it and you associate it exclusively with sexuality. You negatively associate a person's naked body with sex instead of the just the person. You objectify their naked body instead of simply seeing it as an extension of the same person you were talking to before they disrobed. I won't even go into the ridiculous negative connotations you attribute to sex itself.

Ask anyone in the health care industry that has to look at naked people on a regular basis. They will ALL tell you that the taboo wears off quickly and they don't even care anymore. Nudity seen on a regular basis becomes a non-issue. Lack of clothing becomes as little an issue as whether you're wearing green or blue. The connection to sexuality doesn't even enter your mind... in well-adjusted people, anyway.

Anyway, do your kids a favor and get over your irrational fears and bigotry. Otherwise, you might raise a couple of perverts.

Sorry, but you only proved me right, 822401. Your taboo on nudity is baseless and you only associate it with "dirty" feelings of sexuality, as if people aren't naked underneath their clothing. Your irrational fear of nudity only harbors those feelings in your children.

That said, though, I'm not a nudist. I hold the exact same taboo. It's just how I was raised. However, while I may not be comfortable with my own nudity, I do not impose that uneasiness on others. I do not think that my psychological problem gives me any right to complain about other people doing as they wish. After all, nudity is natural and it isn't like nudists are going around thrusting their genitals into people's faces.

But if you feel so strongly about it, no one is forcing you to go out in public. Start a "clothing mandatory" club out in Montana or something.

One last thing. I'd like to know EXACTLY what you have against nudity. What reason do you have for wanting to force everybody to wear clothing? I ask because you claim not to be Christian, yet the only actual answers I've ever seen for this question cherry pick quotes from the Bible and pair nudity with shame and/or "Sin". What's so wrong with "junk"?

Public nudity is neither prurient or wrong except to those who wank in private over porn in magazines or on DVD.

The beach where I go is totally naturist. Nobody there wears anything, from the smallest child to the oldest men and women. And it is neither arousing, disgusting or abnormal. It just IS. When everyone is naked, nobody is naked. Take it from me. It is simple and liberating, and there is none of the prurience that seems to obsess 'many rr', the poster. Somehow I have the impression that the poster would have an erection and jump on the nearest man or woman that caught the interests. Well, it's not like that at all.

Now let's simmer down and enjoy the sun and sand and sea!

I'm torn on this one myself. The fundies at RR involved in this are prejudiced idiots, clearly, who know nothing about nudism. The fact is pedophilia(and underage pregnancies) are lower among practicing nudists than virtually any other social group, far, far lower than among FUNDIE CHRISTIANS. They really need to meet some true nudists and learn that they are just normal people "who just don't wear clothes". On the other hand it is to certain extent incumbent on the nudists themselves to practice their lifestyle in a place where it won't offend the general (non-nudist) public. A group of nude middle-aged males has no business invading a 9 year old's birthday party to wash up(as is discussed in the article they are talking about). I really doubt these people are true nudists, however, I think it was just a bunch of guys having fun.

I don't want to see everyone naked, but every law has a social cost as far as enforcement, money, in the case of some laws the effects of taking people out of society who in the end might be doing more good in their every day lives than harm, and risks created by precedents the law sets. So laws are only good when the benefits of having it and enforcing it outweigh the costs. Generally I think the government exists to resolve conflicts and we shouldn't be creating conflicts where they need not exist. There is always conflict in cases of violence and in determining access to resources (the latter is where I differ from libertarians), but there is no inherent conflict with people going naked. It's not a good thing to invent conflicts of interest over mere preferences. I don't like it when people eat oysters around me. They smell gross, but I'm not trying to get laws passed against that. I also sometimes don't like what clothes a person is wearing, but I don't try to get laws passed for that either.

It is? I live in Seattle's suburbs, and have never heard that.

Also, in the years I went to college and worked in the actual city of Seattle, I never saw one naked person. Even if they were homeless.

If it's only allowed in private (hah!) areas, like a person's enclosed backyard, than I have no problem with and even support it. We rarely get lots of sunshine here, so we should be able to soak it up as much as we can! I do agree with 822359, though, in that it should be reserved for specific places only.

I know that sometimes there is public nudity in, like, special parades and stuff, but don't know what the actual limits are on it. I wouldn't trust RR for that information; does anyone here know?

822395: And when my best friend was in Egypt, she said that she always went in groups so as not to be harrased by men making rude gestures and comments. Because apparently, if a woman isn't clothed according to Purdah tradition, she's automatically a whore.
