An Open Bible in every office of Government

I think we should, as conservatives, add an approach to our agenda that cannot be silenced by anyone. And that is the personal expression of religion in the government. No one can stop a legislator, a judge or even the Governor or President, from having a Bible open in their office, or in their sessions. It simply is not an issue.
It is the public expression of a private individual in a way that brings attention, maybe even agitation, but is completely harmless to any rational person. No one should mind it; because likewise the Muslim legislator should have his Qu'ran opened if he feels it is so prudent, the Jew the Torah or Hebrew Bible.
And so forth.
I think this should be mentioned by conservatives and we should get a petition going to get some of our faithful brothers in office to do this.

Goes right along with the rather prevalent idea of "thou shalt not kill" meaning "only kill the people you think deserve it."
You shouldn't leave books laying open. It damages the spine and can cause the pages to degrade faster.
Other than needless harm to books I don't really care if a person does keep an open Bible on his or her desk.

Since when do employers (including the citizen as employer of public officials right up to the president) pay their staff to read books during the hours that they are paid to work?

Not the fundiest quote around, since this person allows that the holy book might be the Torah or even the Qur'an. Then again, public officials are there to enact, implement, and interpret secular law, not their magic sky pixie's law. Also, I notice the assumption that "our faithful brothers in office" are always brothers and not sisters

Fundie, but not wildly so. Open to the idea of other religious books being accorded the same right, yet implied chauvanism and anti-liberal sentiment (those secular sods!).

No one can, except for the voters who might refuse to re-elect those members of government who have open Bibles laying around the place. Personally, I'd rather see open copies of The Federalist Papers in their offices.

Yeah, I don't care which book-- religious or not-- someone decides to leave open on his/her desk. But these kinds of efforts always seem so empty. What's accomplished by leaving open Bibles everywhere? Just seems like window dressing, no substance, like the "keep the Christ in Christmas" movement...

Not terribly fundie. Everyone adds a personal touch to their office or cubicle, and a religious piece is is as much an expression as a picture. But you can't read a trashy novel during work hours, and most places won't allow, say, a swimsuit calendar. So a closed Bible on your desk, The Last Supper or a crucifix on the wall might personalize your space like family photos and still allow you to do your work.
Not fundie, he's allowing for other religions. Separation of church and state doesn't mean to separate the individual from their beliefs, only that we don't legislate ourselves into a theocracy. Please remember that.
Makes me sad to see posts like this under FSTDT, makes people here seem the dumb ones - as if we all can't possibly tolerate any sort of religion, when some of us here are practicing one form or another.
Painful,I'm going to have to disagree. The act of having their Bible or Holy Book open in their office is not fundie by any means, but the idea of having a "petition" to force someone to do it is "fundie".

I really don't see how this is Fundie. It should be perfectly legal for people to have a Bible, or a Qu'Ran, or a Torah, or whatever.
Secular means you don't explicitly have anything to do with religion. It doesn't mean banning religion in all its forms. So long as the government doesn't support one in particular, which CAN mean banning them all, but it can also mean accepting them all, while showing favoritism to none.

what in the fucking hell does having any kind of book, religous or not, open in your office in front of you have anything to do with anything??? if anyone is that dependant on a fucking book, i do not want them in a position of power or leadership of any kind. how week willed do you have to be where you absolutely need a book to do the thinking for you???? the hell??? i mean, i understand reading is one thing, or referring to a book for something, but this guy os making it sound like they need it otherwise chaos would ensue....

My dad has a very beautiful, very old Bible on a shelf in his study. He does much of his work at home, so that is his office, sort of. I don't think he's particularly religious, though; the only times he goes to church are weddings, funerals and christenings.
I used to have a Quran, a Bible and a Poetic Edda on top of each other in my book-case before we moved. Now they are all in one of the 70 (or so) boxes of books that are waiting until we have build the new library.

I am going to buck the trend and suggest that this quote does belong here, simply because it is magical thinking. Conservator honestly seems to think that having a open bible someplace is going to accomplish something, but what, exactly, will it accomplish? Conservator notes that is a "personal expression," but the fact is that anyone can own a bible, open, closed or sealed. Owning a bible does not mean that one has read it, and even reading it is not mean that one does not game it to justify one's personal prejudices. That's where one gets hopelessly contrived ideas like, "'Judge Not Lest Ye Be Judged.' Means to Judge only when you are not a hypocrite."
It re-emphasizes the fact that Christian fundamentalists worship a book, not their god.
