Only a Christian could possibly view a positive sense of self-worth as a curse. Still, what else should I expect from a school of "thought" that insists Humans are vile, base creatures who can only be redeemed by a bloody Human sacrifice?

Self esteem is a virture in this life. It helps us get things done and live a productive life, which is what I would prefer to do.
I would rather not be depressed all the time, feeling worthless and wanting the end of the world to as soon as possible.
Out of the two scenarios, I would hope that your God, if he is worthy of worship, would pick self esteem as well.

I hold my Dog in higher esteem than I'll ever hold your imaginary tyrant of a god. Hell, I respect the bacteria responsible for my stuffy nose more than I respect imaginary god's -- the bacteria actually exists, and a sore nose is a hell of lot less offensive to me than the notion of a being who wishes that I would hate myself so I'll be obedient to him. Around these parts we call that "emotional abuse", commonly seen in controlling spouses and parents.

This is expected. Fundies want to get rid of people's self-esteem, thereby, they feel the need to grovel before some sky fairy who made them the way they are, but it's still somehow their fault. Then, if they grovel enough, they might get to live in an eternal paradise, while their enemies burn forever in eternal torture. It's all bullshit.

I think some of these folks are taking the whole be humble and have humility thing a bit out of proportion. Self-esteem is absolutely essential to being a functional human being. Having none is debilitating. God/Jesus/otherbiblicalnames never said hate yourself and everything about you, they said don't be egotistical.
Yeah, all little kids need to hear is that they're worthless sinning bastards who need God's magical life support just to wake up in the morning.

It seems to me that if god exists (which is a pretty big if) and he is loving (also a pretty big if, even if you believe that a god exists), then he should care about us enough to want us to be happy with ourselves. Just like any sane loving parent wants their kids to like themselves and be happy with who they are.
If he doesn't want us to have good self-esteem then he's a dick.
But actually, he almost certainly is imaginary, so that just means that you are a dick.

Shit like this was taught to me at church while I was growing up...and my parents wondered why I had so little motivation in school.

I know I think self-esteem is getting too much value heaped upon it, but I hardly see how the only alternative is self-hatred. Are we sure there's no neutral state in the middle, free of both despair and pride?
Self-esteem can be carried to absurd lengths. But you're advocating destroying a child's self-esteem completely. Holy Fuck, there is a middle path, you know. And that way leads to good mental health. You should try it.
You know, these are the same people that when their daughters become strippers and prostitutes, and their sons turn to drugs and suicide, blame the devil instead of looking to the real cause of the problem. Self esteem is important. It's the value of self that makes a woman stand up to a man who is abusing her and knock him the fuck out. It's the value of self that makes a person stand up for their rights, and it's the value of self that makes people strive to better themselves no matter their situation.
Another point. If god is perfect, and he created humans, isn't it a disgrace to god to claim his creations to be so completely and fatally flawed? I hope, if there is a god, when you die Jesus bitch slaps you into next week.

Oh, but you see guys, our esteem in God is supposed to lift us up! We just can't have self esteem on our own, that's self-worship and therefore idolatry!
I see most of the christian scriptures as a thing that was invented to make pesants into better pesants. If people have low self esteem they will be more servile, easer to control and less likely to rebell against their lords and masters. These books even tell slaves to obey their masters.......control and domination.
