It's down to a number of factors, primarily the fact that atheists have no religious beliefs telling them that things like contraception and abortion are sinful.

I really don't see why a belief in God would lead anyone to want to "keep the human race around" any more than a lack of belief would, in any case. Perhaps you're just dumb.

Atheists have less babies than theists because we realize that time and money contraints are harming to raising too many children. If you don't have time to spend with each child, or enough money to give them the necessities of life, then why be like the Duggers? Atheists are trying to keep this world around as long as possible, it's the christians who are the ones who don't want to be here, and are actively trying to destroy the place in the process.

My husband and I have 3 kids, 2 boys and a girl. We wanted 3 kids and we had them. In between when we didn't want to get pregnant we used birth control. God, religion, had nothing to do with it.

Now that they are all teenagers, we are rethinking our decision :)

I don't want kids because I'm a crazy environmentalist and I think that at least 50% of the world's population should forgo having children. We are way too many and we are doubling our population every couple of generations; it is going to lead to a catastrophe of unimaginable size.

If some of us take a stand and don't propagate the population will slowly shrink to more manageable proportions, perhaps before it instead forcibly shrinks by the means of mass starvation.

That's why I don't have kids. Doesn't have anything to do with me being an atheist, except for one thing:
I have several times seen people like the quiverfull-people, Ann Coulter and other freaks say that overpopulation is not a problem because God will provide. I don't believe that. I believe that we have to fix our own damn mess; no one will do it for us.

Um. 'cauase your bible says be fruitful and overpopulate the earth. Christians do it out of obligation more than anything else, despite what they may tell you. I have 7 siblings, my parents are missionaries, and they'll tell you it was at least in part to being told to by their bible. I would say the reason atheists in general have fewer children is that they don't feel morally obligated to overpopulate the world until there's not enough food and water to go around. But I digress.

My reason for not intending to have 8 children like my parents is that it's a nonsensical amount of hassle. I plan on fathering none, and adopting three. Call me evil for disobeying the bible, if you interpret that particular passage as a command and requirement, but adopting seems just a little bit holier in my opinion, even if for no other reason than the verses about taking in orphans and widows. Meh.

Quiverfull is one of the more retarded concepts of Christian fundamentalists. Intelligent people have fewer kids so they can devote more time and resources to them.
My father came from a family with seventeen kids, yet my mother and he chose to only have three. My wife and I chose to have two.
I don't see God filing up the bank accounts of fundies with huge families.
Atheists know there is only this life, so we make the most of it. What is so fucking hard to understand about that?
