Mommytoa3rdgradeboy: I just don't understand their need to "argue" over something that they say doesn't exists. If God doesn't exist to them, why even bother doing all these demonstrations and putting out signs JUST to say that something doesn't exist--I just don't get it.

PS...there is NO SUCH THING AS SEPERATION OF CHURCH AND STATE! All the Athiests/agnostics and government leaders need to read the 1st Ammendment... It specifically states that the GOVERNMENT is NOT to make any law concerning the right to establish a religious organization. I get so annoyed by the stupidity of the MINORITY espressing something that isn't even in the Constitution of these United States.

People desire community. Strength in numbers. The non-religious signs are to engage the fence sitters in conversation and to help those who are atheist/agnostic know that they are not alone. Atheists need community to fight oppression. Likely, the signs, posters, books, t-shirts are only going to increase.

The down side is that liberal religious organizations could be put off by the displays. Just as orthodox and fundamentalist Protestants and Catholics have united on several issues despite undercurrents of prejudice, the atheists could benefit from alliances with liberal religious organizations.

First Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion...

So close, yet so very far away. It means the government cannot establish an official state religion, nor can it support one religion over another in any capacity. Meaning that NO, YOU CAN'T HAS BIBLICAL LAWS. The MAJORITY of the US population is sick of your shit, sick of you espousing ideas that have NO PLACE IN AMERICAN LAW.

The relevant part of the first amendment: Congress shall make no law RESPECTING and establishment of religion or prohibiting the practice thereof.

The important word here is "Respecting".

While it has more then one meaning, this definition makes the most sense, "due regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or traditions of others "

I am going to go on a limb and say that respect had the same meaning 200 years ago, that English was the Founding Father's native tongue.

So Congress cannot make a law "favoring" a religion for it's own sake. It can not take a religious tradition or belief and put it into law. Whether it's a religion the state contrived or one that existed already is not relevant.

And so if the government cannot give special preference towards a religion nor prohibit a religion just for the sake of it being a particular religion, that means it's neutral towards religion.

Separation is necessary for this since without it, government cannot maintain it's nuetrality. Undo influence by any one set of religious beleif would lead to that religion being favored over others.

The idea that this is about creating an establishment of religion is absurd and requires that one willfully not understand the words written.

When one establishes a religion of or a business or anything, one does not say he "respected "it. Nor does one have to have created an establishment ot have show deference (or RESPECT) torwards it.
