No doubt that the Ark of the Covenant DID exist at one time. It was probably captured when Egypt sacked Jerusalem during the reign of Rechavom son of Solomon. It is never mentioned in the Hebrew Bible after that episode. The Ark was likely melted down and used to make jewelry for the Egyptian nobility.
