[Season's Greetings from Westboro Baptist Church]
Want to witness a religious circus this holiday season? Look no further than the third floor of the state capitol in Olympia.
A controversial Kansas church known for blaming American casualties in Iraq on nationwide tolerance for homosexuality has asked the state for permission to erect a sign stating that "Santa Claus will take you to hell."
The sign would join a Christian Nativity set, three signs mocking atheism, and the one that started it all - the sign from the atheist group Freedom From Religion whose message that "religion hardens hearts and enslaves minds" sparked a furious nationwide debate over the nature of atheism and the boundaries between church and state.
According to the Spokesman Review, the text of the Westboro Baptist Church's message would read:
"You'd better watch out, get ready to cry, You'd better go hide, I'm telling you why 'cuz Santa Claus will take you to hell. He is your favorite idol, you worship at his feet, but when you stand before your God He won't help you take the heat. So get this fact straight: you're feeling God's hate, Santa's to blame for the economy's fate, Santa Claus will take you to hell."

They should let them put it up. It will only serve to make Phelps, and Christianity, look that much more ridiculous...plus the sight of a hate filled message like that right next to the pro-atheist sign would be very delicious irony.
Wait, wait, wait. Are you saying this church is saying Americans dieing in Iraq are the cause of homosexuality, or homosexuality is the cause of Americans dieing in Iraq? Either way, both are unpatriotic and you should GTFO of America.
And now they want to erect a sign that says "Santa Claus will take you to hell."?
And they are using that ridiculous fundie song?
These guys do a damn good job of making themselves look bad.
Extended repost, still batshit, and I am so fucking annoyed by this whole to-do over a fucking SIGN. It's a SIGN. If your faith is so weak as to be threatened by the very idea of, "gee, maybe there isn't a god" you should re-examine your position and philosophy instead of BAWWW-ing about "persecution" and "sin" and throwing a fucking tantrum over it. Get. A. LIFE.

//*STILL* not amused.
I really think the Westboro church family has gone off the 'fundie' chart and onto the 'just fucking loony' chart.
It sounds like fundamentalism, but I really think they've just lost their collective marbles. (That is assuming, of course, they had any to begin with.)
"I'm telling you why 'cuz Santa Claus will take you to hell."
Wow! Instead of Fantasy vs. Reality, it's Fantasy vs. Fantasy.
For once, I think the phelps family are actually entertaining.
Re: PokeWithStick's post
And that's why when old Freddie dies, & if the Dantean version of Hell exists, He's going to end up in the 9th Circle, frozen in a block of ice up to his neck, staring at Satan for all eternity, for his treason to his country...
Basically according to Freddie, because god deplores Homosexuality, & the U.S by contrast tolerates it, God is therefore punishing the U.S for the above, by various acts, including the death of U.S Servicemen in Afghanistan & Iraq...
He's tried to picket the funerals of various servicemen, with the result, that the families of the deceased, that mr Phelps has targeted, now have to hire "minders" to stop his church members from "attending" the funeral services.
In addition, legal injunctions have been filed against Mr.Phelps several times, banning his church members from going anywhere near the funeral site...
Rumours persist if he keeps trying this little stunt, the servicemen's fellow mourners, namely his comerades in arms, might have difficulty "restraining themselves" from committing certain acts, in self defence of course, on Mr Phelps & Co...
Phelps is a coward, as well as everything else. He only pickets funerals when he knows the cops will be there to protect him. They turned up at one funeral out in the boonies ... and there were no cops ... or any other likely impartial observers ... and the Phelpses ran for the hills.
I say stop giving Phelps the attention he so pathologically craves.
Ten bucks says that Fred Phelps was irritated that someone else was getting attention in a religion-related matter, and decided he had to out-do everyone else in this whole ridiculous drama.
Seriously, he's a real-life troll.
LOL, and they say it was the atheist sign that started it all.like that nativity scene came second.
I say let the Christians put it up, its their first amendment right.. if we have a public forum for religion then let them do it.
Ahhh... it was getting quiet around the west-boro's, good to see they're still alive and kicking (after all, they're a friggin goldmine for this site). No one takes em serious anymore anyway, so this is just funny&cute
Those poor Phelps children. Imagine having a raving lunatic for a father, it must've been like hell on earth for them.
Belief is a stupid thing.
I watched the documentary by Louis Theroux on BBC2 last night, with him following the WBC (as per his previous "Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends" series). All I have to say after watching it, is that here is another reason why I'm GLAD I'm an Atheist, to join the list of reasons:
Jack Chick & his tracts
Fundy hypocrisy (a la Jimmy Swaggart & Ted Faggard)
The film "Jesus Camp"
Rapture Ready
Kent Hovind
Troy Brooks
Now joined by:
Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church
That song is actually pretty funny.
Unfortunately it would probably traumatize a lot of kids so, fuck you Fred.
Just because you need some imaginary thing to worship to justify the fact that you are all terrible human beings doesn't mean that we're like you.
"Santa's to blame for the economy's fate"
I thought you wanted the country to burn.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
