I remember in philosophy class in college, they tried to brainwash us into becoming atheists for the first month of class.

And they threw up a straw-man version of Pascal's wager. And they said that Pascal's wager fails, because it fails to take into account the myriads of different tiny, dead, or extinct religions.

That is like saying we should let the Communist party rule America because they took less than 1 percent of the vote.

The fact is, it is RATIONAL to believe in one of the GIANT LIVING religions of the world. It is desperately IRRATIONAL to believe in any of the ridiculous tiny, dead, or extinct religions.

Why? Because God would assist the true religion to prosper. It's just rational to believe that He would do so. It is also simply pragmatic and practical to believe that he would.

Only the 5 major living world religions are seriously worth studying. And Christianity wins on every level-headed measure. (I can't go into details here, would take too long).

By 5 major world religions I assume you mean Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Bhuddism and... Sikhism? What do you have against Jews? I mean, with 14 million adherents they are hardly a "major" religion.

But be that as it may, the point is, even if any of what you are saying were true, I couldn't bring myself to believe in the Christian god anymore. If it existed, and there is no reason to believe it does, it'd be one of the most vile, hateful, pathetic, petty, cruel and psychotic entities ever and does not deserve any respect at all, much less active worship. If that means I'll burn in hell for all eternity, fine. I don't think I have done anything to deserve it, but it's a gamble I gladly take if it means I can keep my moral integrity.

Hell isn't a fact. No one has been to Hell. No one can prove Hell exists. The very concept of Hell didn't even exist in early Christianity. It's something made up by the clergy into scaring people into being Christians. It's bullshit. And that is a fact.

Exactly Pascal's Wager hinges entirely upon a false dichotomy. Either the Christian idea of God exists or he doesn't. What if there is more then one god? What if these gods don't demand worship and don't punish you to Hell? What if God is a giant chicken?

Yes. Yes it is. The rational being we wish to belong to groups. Society tends to not like "sore thumbs". So we discriminate against those who are different. Religion is the major cause of discrimination. So belonging to the "Norm" makes sense. However the fact is that the very norm being "a faith in a sky fairy" is more ridiculous and irrational in the first place.

You realize that pretty much all the things you ever learn will be handed down from someone else, originality is not a necessity in an argument, the necessity in an argument is being logical, convincing and correct.

And finally, I believe a different wager on a similar line; Instead of following any religion out of fear of eternal damnation, I'm just going to be nice to people and a generally good person as best I can then when I die if I find myself in front of some deity then I can kindly explain that I was nice purely for the sake of helping my fellow man and if such a deity is all knowing and fantastic then it should be cool with that, if it's mean and petty (like the OT God) then we're buggered anyway. This has the added bonus of me not living life in fear of a hell and in the likely event there is no afterlife then I can take comfort in leading a good and honest life.

Pascal's Wager = cowardly and any deity worth the trouble will see through your selfish motive.

I prefer to be a (generally) good person and hope that if I turn out to have drawn the wrong conclusion from the evidence around me, that'll count for something.

The kind of god that doesn't care what kind of person I was and just wants me to spend my life kowtowing to him in gratitude in order to be allowed to spend eternity kowtowing to him afterwards isn't the kind of god I particularly desire to be in the company of.

So David B.'s wager goes something like.

Atheist's choice:

A1) If I'm a good person and no god exists; then at least I've been a good person. Result!

A2) If I'm a good person and a god does exist, and he judges me upon my works; then I still have a chance of getting into paradise. Possible result!

A3) If I'm a good person and a god exists but doesn't give a monkey's as long as I prayed to him regularly, dressed and ate as he directed, avoided sex, and directed my pent-up frustration at those people he told me were acting naughty; then I'm not much worse off in eternal torment than I would be facing eternal servitude to an omnipotent tosspot.
