What kind of comments were made? Terrorist activity is nothing to joke about, and if the people involved made a comment along those lines, then they should most certainly have been detained and questioned. However, if it was nothing more than a simple case of profiling or over-reacting to an innocent remark, then it was contrary to the US Constitution, and arguably paranoid also.
The FBI, the passengers and the airline staff need to apologise to the family, not the other way round.

THEY should apologize?! I watched them give an interview on Good Morning America. Nowhere in their conversation did they mention "bomb," "terrorist," "infidel," or any of those buzzwords while on the plane. The airline should apologize to THEM (which it has). If this had happened to a Christian family, you'd be screaming yourself hoarse about persecution. Get a life, you victim-blaming loser.
@#894281: They only asked where the safest spot was to sit, which could have meant anything. Safest spot for the kids to sit, safest spot to put their luggage and have enough room, safest spot by the window, anything. Do you seriously believe that if it had been a white American family, that anyone would have made a fuss? People were freaked-out because they were Muslim. That's it. So don't blame them for everyone else's paranoia and ignorance.

If you scare someone by being who you are, it's not your fault. It's the other person's fault for being a bigot.
I guarantee that a person who was not South Asian or Arab would not have been kicked off a plane for the kind of comments that this family was reported to have made. Apologies are in order, but the victims are the last people they're in order from. I'd start with the passengers who reported them because they don't know real suspicious behavior from a hole in the ground and think flying while Pakistani qualifies.

And I think scapegoat should leave the house in a burqa (wouldn't matter if scapegoat was male or female) and try to walk up to the front door of his/her own church without a fight.

toth: How did these worried passengers know they were muslims though? Most likely they assumed because they looked Middle-eastern. The line of thinking "oh noes, he's slightly tanned so he must be a crazy muslim terrorist!" is racist to me. And besides, discrimination based on religion (or lack thereof) is as bad as racism.
Okay, so I found some information about what happened. The Muslim family were discussing where to sit (the back of the plane vs. near the wing) and some moron decided they were going to blow up the plane. They were taken out for interrogation and were not let back on the flight. This was a family with 3 small children ages 2-7.
Fuck you, scapegoat! I've had exactly the same conversation with people I've traveled with, about where the safest place to sit is. This family did nothing wrong, and I hope they sue the shit out of the airline

My spouse is Japanese and he still gets harassed for being brown. When he flies into the states, he goes through Calgary because he's found they're the most rational. I guess that's why I hate the Calgary bashing I see, we've faced way more racism in BC than in Calgary.
I have friends who are Middle Eastern, North African & Indian, their flight rules are basically sit down, shut up, don't make eye contact, don't talk to anyone, just try and blend in with the woodwork.
