You claim that the bible doesn't specifically condemn slavery, well it doesn't condemn littering, or pollution either, or a thousand other injustices either.

How is this the least bit fundy? Just cause it's on FreeRepublic?
I'm too lazy to check the context (dude, that's why this site exists), but it seems like the guy is just stating a fact.
Hell, most holy books fail pretty miserably at condemning immoral shit. It's like whoever wrote 'em picked the most "interesting" sins to condemn at length (ie, buttsex - try saying buttsex ain't interesting) and only tacitly (if at all) mention all the other ways humans can be dicks to eachother.
Well, denying that the bible condones slavery is kind of unique to fundies, who need to pretend their faxed-from-heaven bible is beyond criticism. I wonder if these half-wits think there will be even BETTER bibles in heaven, and God doesn't have a human head, he has a bible there instead?
Hey. Someone set that to music!
Oh, this Yabo. It's not that the Bible doesn't condemn slavery, Skippy. It's that the Bible outright approves of slavery, and lays out practical rules on how to do it right.
Well it may be true that the bible doesn't condemn slavery, littering or pollution, but Jesus had several opportunities to condemn slavery and failed to take them. I don't recall any of the stories n the bible having to do with pollution or littering, but there are several that deal with slavery. Jesus healed the slave of the Roman centurion but instead of condemning him for having a slave he praised him for treating his slave in such a kind fashion.
True, but many christians dont give a fuck about the environment since "the rapture" is happening soon.
Why bother taking care of the planet when you're leaving it?
Littering and pollution were not necessarily concerns of people back then (why isn't "cyberbullying" in the Bible?). Not to mention if the Bible listed every last thing that could be a sin past, present and future (and it better do it explicitly, not this 'could be interpreted this way if I squint right' stuff), it would be more boring than the genealogies and probably the biggest book on the planet. It would probably also make people even crazier trying to figure out what the hell the future sins are exactly and if they've 'come to pass'.
The Bible doesn't have two whole books on littering or pollution. It does have two whole books centered on the subject of slavery: Exodus and Philemon. If God wanted to ban slavery, He had two golden opportunities. Instead, Exodus includes detailed how-to guides on slavery, including sexual slavery.
Er, no, your Babble CONDONES slavery, approves of it, even SETS DOWN SPECIFIC RULES REGARDING SLAVES.
It promotes and condones thousands of injustices and immoral activities.
@Carole -- it wasn't his slave. It was his lover. His *gay* lover. (It's in the context of the Greek words, and is deliberately mistranslated.)
Littering and pollution aren't exactly on the same level as slavery though, and any moral guide should say something against such a horrible violation of human rights. Maybe not the most fundie quote ever, but still a pretty dumb thing to say.
You probably would suggest that the bible endorses slavery, as well any other heinous activities that appeal to you. All very well and good, however:-
There is no god and it definitely does not exist.
The bible contains errors and is inconsistent.
There is no heaven and there is no hell.
There are no angels, demons and devils or satan.
The bible is immoral and unethical.
The bible is no use as a guide to anything.
The bible is a XXX tome.
Religions are vast edifices of monstrous evil.
Prayers and praying are completely ineffectual.
Religions contain massive reserves of stupidity.
Religions are huge repositories of cant and dogma.
Religion and hypocrisy are forever hopelessly entwined.
Fundamental Christianity is not a lover of humanity and is inhumane.
Christian fundamentalists display a remarkable degree of hatred and bigotry that they are unconcerned about trying to hide.
Christian fundamentalists have no tolerance of others outside of their cults.
Christian fundamentalists have neither liking, nor, indeed, a penchant, for logic, common-sense or factual evidence.
Christian fundamentalists are often misogynists because of the bible.
Love ya, Pule.
The bible doesn't specifically condemn slavery because it implicitly endorses it, even providing rules about how to treat slaves. Slavery was normal in biblical times; even if it didn't mention slavery at all, that the bible fails to take a stance against it whilst claiming to be ultimate moral authority would still be strong implicit acceptance.
It doesn't condemn pollution or littering because a) it was written by a largely nomadic people, who of course don't need to worry about such things because they're often on the move and just leave their shit behind them, and b) the concept of pollution barely existed anywhere at that time anyway, since population densities and industrial/technological development were too low to make the problem noticable.
wintertime has missed the point. The OT gives specific guidelines for the ownership and treatment of slaves. Paul explicitly states that slaves should not bother seeking freedom because it would be a distraction from focusing on Jesus (who, according to Paul, was going to return soon). In other words, no trying to dodge this issue by saying "That's the Jewish bible, we Christians live by the word of Paul, I mean Jesus!"
I don't deny that some abolitionists contorted certain verses to make it seem like slavery was unchristian. However, an explicit reading of the bible clearly indicates that slavery is AOK with god and Jesus. All the more reason to get rid of god, the Jesus myth and the bible entirely.
Confused?
