My experience is that Catholics seem to confuse religion with faith. They are so hung up on the traditions and teachings of their religion they have put their faith in them and forgotten, or never knew, the Bible.

As a former Catholic I can attest to the fact that they read the bible during their services. Usually they do three readings, one from the Old Testament, one from the Gospels and one from the Epistles (usually Paul but not always).
The bible is an integral part of their worship, which includes Jesus Christ.
You have no experience of Catholics it would seem.
i used to be in an anglican/lutheran household and i've learnt far more about the bible on fstdt and similar sites than i ever did at sunday school, church or school (i went to a private lutheran school). What i did learn in those places was enough to convince me that the bible was bullshit. I was an avid reader from age 4 and as soon as i found out that walking on water is impossible i declared myself agnostic until age 13 when i became an atheist. but my parents are rather slack with the whole church thing...my grandmother on the other hand goes to an Anglican church every week, does bible study on tuesdays etc. Why wouldnt devout catholics be the same way Miss Molly?
Oh, these people have had so much experience with Catholics, Wiccans, gays, atheists, Satanic child abuse conspiracies, much more so than I have ever had in my entire life, all my jobs, actually being pagan, actually knowing a couple of atheists, going to Catholic school. It's quite fucking astounding. I didn't know they were even able to haul their fat asses up off the sofas in their singlewide trailers.

Trust me. Nobody follows the teachings of the bible. Not all the teachings like you're supposed to.
Lemme guess, this is because Catholics aren't Christians.
Nevermind that if it weren't for the Catholics, there wouldn't BE Christianity. (Too bad I can't go back in time and stop this shit.)
"They are so hung up on the traditions and teachings of their religion they have put their faith in them and forgotten, or never knew, the Bible."
Highly. Polished. Mirror.
I think she means "knows the Bible" in the way the True Christians (TM) in her church know the Bible. Like the parts where it explains the Rapture, and that Jesus didn't really mean that bit about "a camel through the eye of a needle" (or "turn the other cheek"), etc.
Here's some relevant facts for you:-
There is no god and it definitely does not exist.
The bible contains errors and is inconsistent.
There is no heaven and there is no hell.
There are no angels, demons and devils or satan.
The bible is immoral and unethical.
The bible is no use as a guide to anything.
The bible is a XXX tome.
Religions are vast edifices of monstrous evil.
Prayers and praying are completely ineffectual.
Religions contain massive reserves of stupidity.
Religions are huge repositories of cant and dogma.
Religion and hypocrisy are forever hopelessly entwined.
Fundamental Christianity is not a lover of humanity and is inhumane.
Christian fundamentalists display a remarkable degree of hatred and bigotry that they are unconcerned about trying to hide.
Christian fundamentalists have no tolerance of others outside of their cults.
Christian fundamentalists have neither liking, nor, indeed, a penchant, for logic, common-sense or factual evidence.
The bible tends to make the fundamentalist become a misogynist.

Love ya, Pule.
Just because Catholics do think think that the Bible is the sole source of Christian knowledge, it does not mean that they are completley unaware of what is in it.
If as they argue Catholics do not rely on the Bbile at all how do they reconcile this with the fact that the Catholic Bible actually has mnore books than their one ?
I am a former Catholic who was on the path to becoming a Jesuit priest before I realised how God, Christianity and Catholicism were all equally nonsense.
Of course the first sentence should read
Just because Catholics do not think that the Bible is the sole source of Christian knowledge, it does not mean that they are completley unaware of what is in it.
"My experience is that right-wing fundamentalist Christians seem to confuse religion with faith. They are so hung up on the traditions and teachings of their religion they have put their faith in them and forgotten, or never knew, the Bible"

As a convert to Catholicism, I would say that the highly "religious" Catholics are primarily two groups--the very old who were raised in the pre-Vatican II church, and converts from fundamentalism who still latch onto legalistic rules.
As for the Bible--at our Catholic school teachers' retreat today, we spent the last two hours talking about the Bible. And at mass, there are typically four readings, Old Testament, Epistles, a Psalm, and a Gospel. I've been to Fundie services where an entire hour long sermon was based on four words of the Bible (that's how they distort it) and no other passage was read.
If by religion you mean collective rituals of worship, then yes.
I still don't see why faith would be a GOOD thing.
I think fundies believe they don't have to read the Bible because they just know what's in it. Y'know, like Americans in general it's a trait to just assert you know things without ever studying the field.
Just look at your current group of Republican canidates.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
