The people in that tribe have had their innate moral sense short-circuited by their history and lifestyle.
Not knowing how this practice arose, I can't say too much more.
They are living a primitive, animal-like lifestyle, and as Created human beings they can be better than that. Why should they not be educated and taught the right way to live? I'm upset with the politically correct people who say we ought to leave them in this destructive lifestyle just because.
What they're doing is objectively wrong, and they ought not do it.

As far as rituals go, this isn't NEARLY as bad as eating human brains which leads to kuru, or female genital mutilation, or ripping human hearts out of people's chest cavities to make the Sun rise. So, I say leave 'em the fuck alone.

Not that I actually have to ask, but on what basis is morality absolutely absolute, as in, what is it that determines which morals are "correct", and what is it that makes YOUR set of "morals" (which really seem like a large number of arbitrary rules that contradicts your book's greatest commandment [which it points out itself]) the correct one for the entire planet?
This is no fundie comment. Moral relativism is a contested subject with which rational people may disagree. One of my issues with strict moral relativists is that they may come to a moral conclusion based on reason or empiricism but if someone from a different culture disagrees with the conclusion of the logic, based upon faith or tradition, their opinion is of equal validity.(It is not) This may be a fundamentalist speaking but certainly not an exclusively fundamentalist comment. You get a meh.

XD @ all the PC moral relativists in here. Of course what the tribe is doing is wrong, it's fucking pedophilia FFS. The west was the exact same way up until recently, what with uis having no age of consent and the practice of marrying off girls at the age of 14 to a man she might not have even seen yet. Funny how some people here will make jokes about catholics molesting young boys (against the church's teaching) but will defend it when it's a part of some backwood religion.

Throwing in my two cents for the pedophilia thing, they said 'young men'. To me, that implies they only practice this with boys who have gone through whatever ritual makes them men, but I can't say for sure without researching it further.

I use this tribe in every discussion and comment on why moral relativism is bullshit. I don't see why they should get a pass for it whereas female genital mutilation is criticised, as is marrying adult men to 9 year old girls in Yemen. Why should pedophilia ever be considered okay just because some tribe in the middle of the jungle in New Guinea is doing it as opposed to some creepy bastard in the US?
For those who don't know, this is their rite of passage. These are mostly pre-pubescent boys doing things to their elders that thousands of Catholic priests wish could legally happen to them. Sure, maybe they're culturally indoctrinated from birth to accept that, but does that mean that "child grooming" is okay too if the pedophile does it from birth?
Now I'm not saying we should go in with guns blazing and convert them to Christianity, but this is a pretty textbook example of a "cultural practice that needs to die out" and the government of New Guinea should be looking to what some African countries have done to get rid of FGM as an example of what to do here.
