Oh, my family has a certain propensity to cancer, but you'd think I would have personally known more sick that that girl that died back in first grade and my grand-aunt (or whatever it's called in english) if 97% of the world had it.

I never thought I'd say this, but DIAF.
I had rhabdomyosarcoma when I was 17. I spent a month in radiation and another year in chemotherapy.
The funny thing is that I was still religious then, but since I've stopped believing, I've had no serious health problems. Proving, in fundy logic, that God watches and protects atheists and non-believers.

I suppose ajrocket doesn't "believe in" evolution either, which explains perfectly why those diseases that have a genetic basis are not naturally decreasing in frequency (post-reproductive onset).
Admittedly modern society is too quick to bring a fever down in cases of the common cold and the flu, simply because it is the body's natural defense against the invaders and it really doesn't hurt the patient unless it is really high, lasts for more than a few days, or they are already in a compromised group (elderly, chronic illness, other issues.)
However... Nowhere in ANY of the alternative medicine, conventional medicine, and wacked out snake venom medicine have I ever read any so stupid as fever kills cancer. This kind of sad craziness leads to too many deaths each year, but assisted suicide is still illegal here. Crap.
Note: Individual in question is a child with a family member dying from cancer and a mega-christian mother.

Is he saying that bad people are struck with cancer by God? If so, within the past five years of my life, three people who I loved and were very close to died of cancer. They were three of the kindest, most decent individuals I had the privilege of knowing. So if I understand you correctly, all I have to say is...fuck you.

This is bullshit. Exhumed bodies, and remains from hundreds of years ago or even more, were discovered to have cancers. "Wasting away" was one the terms for cancer. Plus people died much younger than they do now, so died before the cancer could kill them.

97% is an excessively high guess. It's more like 1 in 3 people, or 33%. I doubt it was ever as low as 3%, though I can imagine that levels would go up over the past 100 years, with more and more people being exposed to carcinogens.
seems like he read some science journals and made a mish-mash of what they said. i don't believe fevers kill cancer, though they are part of the immune response. a high temperature gets the immune system going, signaling the body to get its butt in gear and fight off an infection.
NEWSFLASH (to him at least)-everybody has at least 20 cancerous cells in their body at all times. shit happens. but the body is able to kill the cells, and fix broken dna even before the cancer can start spreading. sometimes it is just overwhelmed, or not up to the task, and cancer gets a toehold.
Local heat can kill some cancers -testicular. Fevers have not been known to do so. Full body heating, if done incorrectly, can cause cancer.

Seriously, though, I was reading about some very promising cancer research that works by forcing a major immune response against the cancerous cells. No radiation, no chemo. Just a small implant that carries the chemicals that basically train the immune system to recognize the cancer as a serious threat. Still in animal trials so far, but those have been very successful so far.
I always thought the chance depended on the type of cancer, but it was usually around 1 in 3.
But of course this random jerk from yahoo answers (hah!) knows more the actual doctors, i guess.
Ironically, you're currently participating in social evolution. Millions of idiots like yourself just believe whatever random bullshit their misfiring synapses, for whatever insane reason, have thrown up, and a lot of them suffer or die horribly as a result. The survivors, i.e. not you in this particular case, are the ones that have, by chance, stumbled upon ideas that actually work. This does result in the net gain of knowledge for the population, but it's inefficient and requires extinctions in order to function. That's why we invented science, which is faster, more efficient and doesn't need people to die so often.

I think you;re wrong there.
^ as far as current studies know, reducing a fever doesn't really make much difference one way or the other to the final prognosis, unless it's very severe. In the end you may as well just do it to make the patient more comfortable.
My mother was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma about 12 years ago. She went through several months of chemotherapy, and I administered neupogen shots at home. She's fine today and going strong.
Modern medicine saved her life, so just shut the fuck up.
Why yes, as average lifespan increases, more people end up with cancer. Also, there are drugs for most illnesses nowadays which also increases the liklihood of cancer being the thing that kills you. I don't see how any of that is relevant to what you're trying to say though.

Fwiw, what this person is probably thinking of is an observation some years ago of an apparent pattern of spontaneous remissions of malignant cancers being associated with comorbid infections. It has been suggested that the infection stimulated the immune system which made it more able to fight the cancer, making an anti-cacner vaccience a possibility. SInce one doesnt hear of it now,it presumably doesnt work.
