We're the Boogeyman. When I was unsaved, I was afraid to hear anyone read the Bible out loud, I'd put my hands over my ears and run from the room. It made my heart pound, it made me break into a sweat, it scared me, although I would never admit it. Instead I made fun of whoever was reading it, I mocked it, to give myself some control back.
That's all they're doing. By posting us up there, out of context, it's no contest, no rebuttals, they can tear it down and mock it until they feel they're in control again and they've "killed" the Boogeyman, what heroes! They really need to explore WHY they fear hearing the Word of God, but they're not very introspective, they'd be saved by now if they were.
They're immature. They'll either snap out of it and get saved, or still be doing that when they're 80 (except we won't be here that long!)
We do need to pray for them. It's their only hope.

You're not the Boogeyman, you're the Whooshmeisters. In any case, as atheists we don't believe in gods, angels, demons, devils or boogeymen. That's why we are called atheists.

I have no problem reading the bible, why would I? I never had the same problem that you claim you had as a child. I'll just open my bible at a random page, and read a couple of lines, here we are, page 802, Haggai, Chapter 2, verse 3, :-

Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do you see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?

There, that didn't hurt did it. I don't think I broke out into a sweat at all.

We don't care what you believe as long as it's not harmful. We take you to task because you say so many hateful and bigoted things. The greedy pastors and other religious leaders of your cults actively use deception and lies in order to get their version of religion in schools.

The only thing we want saving from is fundamental zealotry and bullshit. We are quite prepared to argue any point with you but you have no desire to use reason and logic. If you adopted a more rational response, you have a far better response from atheists.

I've heard people read the Bible out loud many times, without feeling any fear. I've even read it myself.

As far as "no contest". You are VERY free to post your rebutals ANYTIME you want and as much as you want under each topic. But lets talk about "no contest" on rapture ready. If I were to join rapture ready and oppose some of the posts on that disgusting board..how long would it be before I got banned? 3 posts? 1 post? Talk about control freaks. It is my opinion that Christianity cannot completely dominate everything unless it censors everything else (which is the boner of all Cretins..to force people to be quiet and accept the cretin dogma)

You Rapture Ready people are more than welcome to post here as much as you want. But something tells me that WE FSTDT people are not allowed to post on your board unless it is agreeing with your posts and world views.

Wow talk about missing the point of a website by not knowing anything about it.
1. FSTDT is for the lols. Hence the mockery and enjoyment at the expense of the most irrational people not locked in loony bins.
2. No-one commenting on the latest posts thinks they're heroes or that they've defeated anyone, they do it to benefit those who would read their comments (either lols or intellectual rebuttals).
3. Nobody actually fears the Bible unless they have a phobia.
4. Introspection is how many of us came to discard religion.

this statement right here is how i knew this post was complete and utter bollocks. fstdt provide direct links to the posts that are being shown so anyone can go and read the entire thread if they so wished.
i'm too tired to go into the whole, "we're atheists, we don't fear god, we just don't believe in him" bit, because it wouldn't do any good.
this person is trying to insinuate that people have an aversion to the bible because of some sort of demonic influence, no normal person (atheist or non-xtian) would "cover their ears and run from the room", what rubbish.

P.S. - tygerkittn, I for one don't "fear" the Babble. If someone starts reading from it near me, I just yawn. It's an fantasy book written by a bunch of goatherders 4,000 years ago, with updates every few centuries until about 1,700 years ago - when it got "fixed in stone" as it were.

In short, it (to my mind) has very little relevance to the modern world, and especially to the Industrial and post-Industrial ages. As a moral guide, it can be handy (that whole "love thy neighbour" part is quite nice), but as far as specific laws go, it is out of date.

We tend to look for answers outside ourselves. If we were as introspective as you, there's no telling how many delusional things we might believe.

Like many other people here, I have 2 bibles on my bookshelf. One has been in my family for a long time and I wouldn't want anything to happen to it, just for sentimental value.

I'm not afraid of the Bible, there is even one reading I like: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. I Corinthians. Had it read at my wedding.

But that is probably the only decent thing written in the whole damn book.

When I was a kid I read the Bible and heeded "The Word" to the best of my ability. As I grew older I noticed the discrepancies between the purported words of Christ and the constant background din of his self-proclaimed followers. When I pointed this out to others I was told that my problem was that I wasn't faithful *enough*. I do not sweat at the sound of "The Word," nor do I flee in terror. You people think its a choice between embracing god's grace or rejecting it. You're wrong. It's a choice between staying asleep or waking up; between comming up for air or wilfully letting yourself drown. Wake up, tigerkitten, unless you'd rather drown.
