Also, the "under God" but wasn't in the original Pledge of Allegiance. It was added during the Cold War to show that we Americans different from those evil, godless Communists.
So basically, it's symbolic of the Red Scare (really, one of America's brightest moments) and the misperception that atheists are all Communists.
By the way, First Ammendment. Put all the God you want into you're personal, private life. I really couldn't care. And you can tell me exactly you're thoughts on religion or go ahead and say whatever you want. The government, however, is not supposed to do that.
